two square holes for (I’m assuming) press-in plastic threaded things, and then a hole for a light harness?

Is it for a small marker light?

Yes, I’ve found a few photos of a red reflector there. Never on a stock rig though. I firmly believe it’s for a reflector or even a repeater, but I’d love a part number for OEM if such a thing exists.

I think the USA had legislation requiring repeaters & reflectors to the side of vehicles, in the UK that area was blank
If I recall the rear side just needed to be a reflector and the front side needed to be repeaters

We do have DOT (dept of transpo) regulations, however they were satisfied by the lateral red reflectors on the tail lamp assembly alone.
