Hi

My 1991 H reg V8 twincarb beast is giving me a rather loud clunk on changing gear. This I beleive is down to the main output shaft splines being very worn and knackered. What I am after finding out is which gear box is it so I can by a direct replacement?? Reverse is next to 1st gear (all the way left and up). Any ideas folks cos Ive had enough of being gentle with the clutch pedle to stop it being noisy.

Cheers

Mark

the R380 is the later box and is a direct replacement, LT77 would cost you £395 exchange from ashcrofts. from £445 for R380 also from ashcrofts. i personally dont know of any other gearbox specialists ;)

dont you need the later type gearbox mountings and drive shafts with the 380? Mines a series 1 disco.

Whats the difference between the lt77 and the 380?

Another thought is will the transferbox need a recon as well at the same time due to ware from gearbox shaft out put shaft??

someone will correct me if i am wrong but i think that the mountings are exactly the same as the R380 is a direct replacement. With the R380, reverse is under 5th. Other than that they are just a revised box with alterations to make it better.
the gear and transfer box have to come out at the same time so it may make sense to have it looked at even if it is just a look to check that all is well.

Just another idea to keep my options open and cost down. Is the lt77 gearbox and transferbox out of a tdi the same as the v8 (gearing wise) With no mods required to fit as there are a couple of complete gear and transfer boxes from 200tdi's knocking about on flea bay reported to have no clunks or noises? As much as I would like all new bits to go in to the landy, funds dont always permit:(
