I did not expect the rear differential of my Freelander 2 to fail and posted this question on Quora

I have contacted Land Rover Customer Service that emphasise they are a quality company. Customer Service but fail to accept total responsibility for dealing with or forwarding "non-compliance" issues to the relevant sections of Land Rover. This does not seem to accord with quality procedures for dealing with formal complaints as set out in
https://www.bsigroup.com/en-GB/iso-9001-quality-management/

Will some added pressure here and on Quora push Land Rover to improve their engineering and reliability and quality control?

The only surprise is that the diff lasted this long on a 2009 car!

They are notoriously bad. Initially they were fixed under warranty, then if you complained loud enough outside warranty LR would part pay. However, now on a 10 year old car, I'd say that's just run-of-the-mill and it is really your responsibility to fix.

You can't expect a car to go on for ever without issues, and to be fair to Land Rover and the F2, the rear diff is about the only problem with the car. You should service the Haldex though.

So, I'd say, roll up your sleeves and get fixing it, or bung it in a garage, and get over it. If you want a reputable place fore parts, you can't go far wrong with....

You quote:

"Disgraceful to UK engineering that with the long history of differential problems in Land Rover products that this issue should have occurred with my low mileage vehicle of this age. It is even more disgraceful that a Land Rover agent should charge more for an unguaranteed repair to the pinion bearing than an independent engineer is charging for a replacement unit with upgraded bearings and to provide a warrantee of his work!"

You are comparing a main dealer with marble floor show room, luxury environment... to someone in a garage working on his own. That's why main dealers cost more. Their running costs are higher. You can claim back some of this by eating one of the free cakes.

The main dealer work does come with a warranty. The warranty on parts and labour is available for all to see on their web site.

Please note the replacement unit is a reconditioned unit.
