What does your TD4 engine sound like?

I have thought for a while that my 2001 TD4 engine sounded a little like a tractor and then a couple of months ago, i took my freelander to Bala Landrover experience where there was another intrepid freelander TD4 i think it was a 53 plate. His sounded really smooth and not tractor like.

When i start mine up in the morings, it sounds like there is a knocking noise under the bonnet.Quite a loud clattering sort of sound, once the engine is revving a little it goes. I recorded a little bit of video to show the noise of my TD4.

Does yours sound like this?

Can't say I have paid much attention to the idle sound with the bonnet open but mine doesn't sound noisy at all.

Mines quieter than that.

I do get a sort of rapid ch, ch ,ch sound when taking off

thats noisy nitropaul, how many miles on the clock? sounds like a well worn engine to me.if i were you i would get it checked out. whats you cars history ? ive got a td4 with 140k it sounds nothing like yours.good luck tim

Hi guys, it's a 2001 td4 auto with 94k on the clock. Bought it from someone in London last year. Have serviced it twice since and have been doing a little off roading with it aswell.

Could be an injector issue

or mechanical such a crankshaft pulley or - internal!

Nope. Shouldn't sound like that at all. Whip off the plastic cover and check for injector issues.

My TD4 has done 101000 and it sounds nothing like that. i little rattely when its cold when pulling away but runs sweet as when warm.

Hi my TD4 has done 111k and is not as noisey as that however....it is not far off.....
mine got allot noiser after putting in millers and changing oil twice with millers XFE....I think with mine I kinda decabonised it......it goes well. Whats performance like on yours......have you put fuel cleaner through system???
