What do we carry

Just had a clear up in boot today of the D2 and other half told me off for carrying various bits like coolant, socket set etc saying if I have RAC I don’t need it, told her somethings are easier to fix and quicker than waiting on RAC, just wondering what do others carry in boot for things like snow or breakdown etc?

I replaced one of my rear seats for a storage box and have a 215 piece tool kit, tow rope and a dozen meat hooks and extendable pole stashed in it

back door pocket i have a liter of oil, multimeter and a spare dog lead

Good one, that does remind me I have a knife in their too although I hadn't though of it for that purpose

Bit of oil, bit of water, few screwdrivers/adjustable/bulbs and thats pretty much it, days have long gone where you can fix stuff roadside.
Tbh if you keep on top of the cars needs the chances of needing tools are almost zero.

True, maintenance is key but always good I think to carry few bits.

5 litres of water, tie wraps, toolkit, tow rope and shackles, farm Jack, cooker and food, hat gloves etc

Same here. I have a plastic box with some oil, a 5 litre of washer bottle top up, some PSF, and a multi screwdriver handle and it's box of assorted bits. And a ratchet and socket for a wheelbrace.
But I haven't broken down in about 30 years. So the main reason they are in the car is that they aren't taking up space somewhere else.

The manuf. tool kit with a couple of extra small tools, a litre of eng. oil, ditto coolant mix, tow strap, fire extinguisher, pair of small wheel chocks, HD wheel brace (for nuts overtighened by hairy-arsed tyre fitters) block of wood (for jack) LR umbrella, warning triangle, Hi-Vis tabard.
Decades ago I carried the kitchen sink (aka cantilever tool box) in various Series, but not any more. As the OP says that's what we have breakdown cover for ... unless I was in a real hurry to resume my journey I wouldn't even change a wheel these days.

Enough tools to rebuild anything, a multimeter, and most important for any L322.......diagnostics, you never know how far you're gonna get before the suspension goes tits up

We are a camper and so we are away for up to a week at a time - only SE England (the Series may be able to cross the Sahara but the New Forest is fine for me) so we do carry a few parts and tools. I seem to be getting into a trap of carrying the parts for the last breakdown not the next so we have some hoses, a hub seal, some crimps, jump leads, tow ropes. Mostly we carry food, coffee, chocolate and some extra clothing. We had one major breakdown 100 miles from home when the gearbox broke. We were in a field and this completely defeated the recovery truck driver/sat nav so it was long wait. The food came in very handy in keeping a child happy and we caught the tail of an hurricane so staying dry really mattered.
(We were in Ashton Court in Bristol, I gave the exact location but the driver insisted in-putting "Ashton Court" and driving to the post code which wasn't even the main building but the admin offices miles away. As it was a recovery they had to change drivers at 50 miles so we were left in the East Bound lorry park at Reading Services in the storm, - after an hour wait and lots of calls we found our next recovery truck in the West Bound car park. Why would anyone go to the West Bound side for a trip from Bristol to London?) So we have food, more food and every variety of phone charging lead possible.

Like @Turboman the stuff I carry about mainly saves storing it elsewhere.
Having said that, November 2019, with some mates we did near 3000 Km in Portugal, a lot of green lanes, so we were all tooled up to self repair/recover and I have just left most of it in the 90. The only problems I had was a bulb shaking loose (twice) driving over cobbles, and a fuel return union shaking loose.
So, in the 90 is a full cantilever box, socket set, tyre inflater, repair manual, bottle jack, recovery strops, shackles, snatch block, gloves, waterproofs, 10 ltr jerrycan, oil, coolant, gaffer tape, washer fluid, bulbs, indicator/brake/sidelight, warning triangle, safety vests. Loads of other crap I can't remember.
