Hello all

been putting a lightweight back together for some time now but if I’m honest I ran out of talent ages ago... its not the renovation I have an issue with, it just got to the stage where I need to know what it is I’m working on to go any further... what is it.? What’s its designation? What bits will fit from what? But the big hurdle is the id... or VIN... it doesn't have one...!!!

It was rotting in a shed and had been offroaded before that and was in a sorry state... now, the chassis is perfect and all shiny black the bulkhead is 80% new... only thing is there are now no chassis numbers there. There was never a logbook or any reg plates to go on...

What do I do now...!!!...???

There is no way of the dvla identifying it… Can I buy a proper knackered landy and burgle its id for mine…? Is that legal…? And if it is legal, does it have to be a lightweight id or can I use a series id…?

I don’t wish to be jailed so please help………..
 
coil series tax exempt special type thing, reckon it would end up on q plate
 
ringer...lol no i don't think so it was me who pulled it apart and put it back together again, the chassis is the origional one i just linished many new parts into it to make it good... it had chassis numbers, it was just rotten and unreadable... the issue is, in the rebuild it lost its id... there is nothing hooky about it... it was found in a shed rotting away and the previous owner is rotting 6" under...
 
probs not the best thing to talk about on a forum we dont want the rozzers finding out what we get up to :D not that we do anything dodgy :p
 
buy another one the same but wrecked. chassis only will do. use the V5 and number plates. no one will know or care. beetle owners do it all the time, even changing chassis so they can run tax exempt!!

you can buy vin plates off ebay :rolleyes:

i'm sure someone can sort you out.

if it was a brand new bmw i would say no way! but for you i think it is fine as you not doing it for financial gain.

ah , just stick it on , chop the old "donor series " up with a 9" grinder and dunt worry bout it, thers a lad on ebay that will make a nice set of chassis plates , ther very pretty :) look really original, they finish any rebuild nicely ,

trust me;)
 
thanks for the views folks... (say nowt if officer dibble comes knocking)

so im right in thinking by putting a new id from a knackered series (then getting rid of the "donor") will be ok...? it would be like replacing every part of the donor vehicle...?

and i can't find anything on the DVLA website that says totaly replacing every part on a car is ilegal (unless something is nicked)

do i sound like im justifying it or what.......

but...!!!

will i get away with a series logbook, id, chassis number and vin plate... for a lightweight...? or is it obvious on the logbook they are different... (there are not too many lightweights about for breaking)
