Yip, the outer track rod end, the inner track rod end. A longish bar with a ball joint fitting that screws into the rack end. 👍
I think that's what it is.
With the help of @ER1C wobbling my wheel.. i can feel movement in the driver's side gaiter. I think!
Which is weird because the noise (while driving over bumps) sounds like it's coming from the left, no clunk when the drivers wheel goes over a bump.

Could it be unrelated?

If there's play it's an issue, whether or not it's "the" issue my good man. 🤔👍

Ah, those damn "tuning" clowns ruining their cars to make more noise really drive me crazy. Not for any noise reason, that is those idiots problem, but because their butchering of exhausts, violating emission and noise regulations, has everyone over here on edge regarding exhausts. From cops to MOT TÜV. And now I suffer, as replacement standard exhaust manifolds are expensive as hel, hard to combine and used anyways. Rebuilding mi e is a fools errand. And the tubular ones I could get registered without issues don't fit the normal system, road worthy because it patttern fits the original.

And the full tubular system is not TÜV compliant. Well, that means some exhaust welding I guess to make the tubular manifolds fit.

Yesterday I could sleep, so I did what every sane person would do, I dug deep into this whole exhaust without certificate, noise and registration thing. And honestly, despite this bring noz really cheap, appr. 700 bucks for the noise testing and registration, I should be fine. It turns out that the noise levels I am allowed to have are high (!), 83 dB(A) measured at a 45° angle 50 cm away from the exhaust or 79 dB(A) measerued according to DIN. Modern super cars are allowed to have 75 dB(A). That might just work out, me thinks!

I don't think those number are particularly high! Just normal

Well, super car noise limits in Germany are 75 dB(A), so 79 is roughly 30% higher than that. Normal road cars are capped at 73, if I remember correctly, I am allowed to be at least 60% in perceived noise over that. dB(A) is on a logarithmic scale, not linear, so around + 6 to 10 dB(A) are perceived double as loud.

Turned out that i am not the only one with that problem. Everyone, from classic motorbikes (motorbikes are the main target for Police noise controls I was told) to classic sportscars like Porsches and the like, has the same Problem: obsolete exhaust parts and no new ones being certified by the manufacturer. That also means that there are well defined procedures in place for those cases, all I need to do is follow those.

By bike exhaust (OEM) is stamped 93db

Nice! Bikes are allowed higher limits here as well, some as high as 105 or so. Old enough, and there are no limits at all.

Germany authorities turned nuts regarding exhaust noise, some people are just crazy. Emptying exhaust dampeners, installing straight pipes, using dedicated racing exhausts, or cheap Chinese look a likes, on road cars and bikes. Some even install loud speakers to fake V8 sounds in the trunk. And than red line those through down town to impress the ladies, and other **** heads like them.

Stupid people are always part of the reason why we cannot have nice things.

My two P38's definitely sound different, but MOT testers & me have never checked noise levels. The Blue P38 has single back box & does sound noisier, but no one has ever complained. Ran it once after the engine rebuild with CAT's off, which turned a few heads but no complaints !!
