They've got an AWFUL reputation for reliability out here... and for very expensive repairs, but that's because we only get DSG ones and insist on using them in crawling city traffic.
That one being a manual, I dunno. What model is it anyways?

Whoops... you meant the leather restoration product. Your steering doesn't look too bad, actually. I'd be tempted to just clean it up with say Autoglym leather cleaner, some black shoe polish and once that's dried, to finish up with the Autoglym leather care balm thing.
Just be careful with leather restoration products which use putties/fillers, especially on the steering wheel. You can kinda sorta get away with those on rarely-used passenger seats, but even on the driver seat, the ones I've used didn't last very long, leaving an even bigger mess to deal with.

Its a MK5 Golf 1.6 46mpg....... (yea you dream of getting 30 dont you? lol)

She gets around 27 - 30mpg on 'normal roads', but home is constant up and down, twisty, bendy, blind bend, hills and dips. Which in a manual would be up and down from 1st to 3rd gear, rarely seeing 4th. So the drop is understandable.Ahhhhh to go for a run along a motorway or dual carriageway

I droved it. Dash is showing 18mpg over the last 1/2 tank.. need to fill up now to see what I've really done. I reckon that's an essential journey

My take on your steering wheel remains the same though...... a darned good cleanup, shoe black and then leather care balm. It doesn't look as if its begun to develop pits in it so I don't think you need to go any further than that.... which I'm not sure will help with a steering wheel, as I said earlier.

Actually I can get low to mid 30s on my DSE if I stuck to the speed limit, on the highways, in cruise control. Heh. Offroad, not nearly as much!

Oh yeah... that'll do it. I think you'll still need to give the wheel a darned good cleanup first though. Especially since it's black.
Easy to look after, sure...... but you don't know just how much muck is on there, especially if the car has been "pre loved".
Actually I'll shut up now. It just doesn't bear thinking about.

Same here. I had a VW Polo once. Parts cost a fortune. It was cheaper to run an Astra GTE (the one with the digi-dash) although the Polo was still going 10 years after the GTE rotted and fell into the big car-park in the sky.
I have a leather cleaner, and then put some ipa on it, might put some 2500 grit on it to key is as well, It belonged to my niece from new, so its not too back its quite clean insideOh yeah... that'll do it. I think you'll still need to give the wheel a darned good cleanup first though. Especially since it's black.

I have to say, that is one very clean looking car given that it's at least 13 years old. 46mpg, huh? Well at least you can say you're balancing out your carbon foootprint after years of running a DSE.
I do the same.... I ride a Yamaha NMax when I travel less than 10 kilometres and don't have to carry people or stuff, and drive a Proton Savvy for when I do, leaving my E38 beemer and soon-to-be-reactivated P38 for the long haul trips.
It's almost like a sort of penance, for having these big, thirsty cars. You're just getting started on yours now.
