I dont know why you just dont buy something that needs work on it, and you fix it up, better than buying a mint one, you made it yours then
I understand what your saying buddy albeit due to long term health issues those days are sort of gone for me now buddy and with winter months drawing in fast i just wanted something that was really nice so i could just enjoy it straight away and have it serviced by my local RR specialist down the road.
Cheers

Well i was going to hopefully buy a minter P38 tomorow as a second attempt after the first disaster i encountered BUT the selling dealer has just rang me to say after all the prep of the car today with a fresh M.O.T yesterday which passed 100%, and 5 new tyres fitted this morning and a fresh service carried out the engine has decided to start leaking oil and he cant find out from where. I am gutted but also playing it safe so i have decided not to go ahead and he has refunded me my deposit in full.

Big sigh of relief and i think i will now just give up on my dream of owning a P38 now. Gutted. There was no way i could have gone through a second engine disaster again.

Wise move,if he cannot find a oil leak then I wouldn't trust him with anything else, its not rocket science when all said and done. Was that why you may have been up on the Wirral?

Rocker covers
Front cover
Sump
Front crank seal
Rear main
Headgasket, "unlikely"
Valley gasket

all are quite simple to resolve, chances are it's been leaking for a while, I pressure wash mine before each MOT with industrial grade degreaser ;)

Except the oil from mine comes out the front pump seal in my gearbox. ;)

Engine is dry at the moment ;)

you May have got lucky again. The M51 Bmw lump doesn’t tend to leak oil not a good sign. I still get suspicious when all the oil is where it’s supposed to be never feels right with a LR
it’s not about good money gets good P38s. Top money gets top shpiel is all. Same as they aren’t generally later model = newer = better, they seemed to take more pride in making them originally.
You just sorta know when it’s the one. Won’t matter how rough it is then you’ll love it even if it makes your life a misery.

Best thing you can do is stick around and just read p38s in the searchbar and join in with us.
in time you will know what you are looking at and no dealer BS will work on you. Then when a nice one turns up (does happen occasionally) you nab it!
Patience ;)

I get what your saying, I am not 100% myself, and I have a P38 and a series II that I would like to put power steering on, so I can use it, If it wasn't for ppl on here helping me out I would have got rid of it a long time ago
