Yeah, I wondered about that as he actually said ‘as it’s not a permanent 4x4’…. I was absolutely flabbergasted.

He couldn’t have caused any harm by doing so could he ? Or would he just get bogus readings ?

He also flagged a ball-joint boot (which is intact) and a bump-stop (a replacement for which I have in my hand, just couldn’t face trying to squeeze it on (and didn’t think was a critical MoT failure)
It can cause issues, the VC hates it and in worst case scenario can cause expensive bits of metal to turn into glitter.

He could destroy the transmission as the VCU will lock up. They are supposed to put rollers under the wheels on the axle not being tested.

I contacted DVSA for clarification and they weren’t terribly helpful.
I’m about to speak to the test centre again now.

...or just let it go, and find a test centre that knows what to do.
No offence (and I mean that) but the rest of us don't have this problem.
Some things are just better walking away from, rather than trying to fix their narrow little world for them.

So today a total muppet failed my old girl at an MOT test because the ABS light was on.

I pointed out that the light stays on until the vehicle is driven above 5mph and then goes out. He shrugged and said that he couldn’t do that on his rolling road so it was a fail.

I’m honestly at a complete loss for words…

Show him the manual and failing that it must be possible to report him somewhere for incompetence.

Name and shame on here for a start.

Holy f*ck. He thinks it isn't permanent 4W drive and put it on a front only roller? Take it somewhere conpetent to check for damage.

I would demand a refund, he should have known he doesn't have the correct facilities and, told you he couldn't do the test,
IMO the tw@t should lose his testers licence, hope he hasn't caused any damage.

yesterday -after I’d grilled him on Monday and spoken to DVSA he said: I checked to see if it had permanent 4x4 and put the rollers into 4x4 mode -which is a completely different story.

of course I can’t prove anything and it’s his word against mine.

still think I should get the test fee back based on him failing it for the ABS light…

It is not possible to put the P38 on the rollers in 4 x 4 mode, it must have free rollers put under the axle not being tested. The test rollers under one axle with the wheels on other axle not turning will cause the VCU to lock up and could destroy the transfer box and/or diffs.

Take photos. Keep a written record by letter or email. If the car is damaged you will need evidence.

You can ask to see "4x4 mode". As others have pointed out either all wheels are driven or the one axle has to be free to spin. Easy enough to check that.

I can’t quite get my noggin around the physics of it but I suppose if the rotation is equal but opposite the net rotation at the prop is zero ?

That would leave no drive to the prop so would be OK, but not sure how an effective brake test could be done with contra rotating wheels and if just one wheel locked then you are back with potential transmission damage.
