Did you check the heads were flat? It's always worth checking alloy heads IMO.

Checked to the best of my ability, seemed flat enough.. didn't have them skimmed

time to take them off and get them checked properly, unless you can find another engine

Only need a little deviation, Plate glass and engineers blue would show up any low spots.
A skim would probably sort it but I'm no expert on the V8

Is there any reliable way to trace if my problem is the head or the block? I'm guessing the answer is no, not without taking the head off and testing, taking the block out and testing.
Just can't see why it's since replacing the gasket? Before i did that i could go to work and back, that's a 30 mile round trip.. now i can't do a mile

Always get them skimmed and tested kerms, old school cast heads from time gone by could be relied upon... Sorry to hear this

I didn't check, but it was #3 before i started.. the coolant galleries are front and rear, nowhere near #3
