What did I do wrong?

Sorry, closing the door after the horse has requested aqua minerale here, but only just read the fred. Thought it was a loose connection not the glow plugs, they wouldn't stop the injun turning.

Dunno what the cable is as don't know what colour it is or what pole of the starter motor it goes to, but it's back on & it works!

My fave was going to be check your battery terminals, loose -tive will allow enuff curent for a relay to click, but not enuff to supply something like the starter.

Anyways, yer sorted. Make sure all the connections to the starter/solenoid are clean, tight & put a bit of vaseline on them as they're pretty vulnerable unner there & starting a doosul motor asks a lot of them.
 
Ok.

Got home, battery fully charged. Stuck it back in. Nothing. Took fuse box apart, checked all wiring. Fine.

Changed all Glow Plugs back to the original, gave starter motor a tickle with my fingers and tried again. It burped at me. So it showed signs of life for a millisecond then back to nothing.

I refered to the fault finding bit in the Haynes and everything led to a faulty starter motor.

So I gave up, went in and had dinner.

But I couldn't leave it. So me and the missus went out, I showed her the problem and she kept saying "You can fix it, I know you can".

At that moment I felt a cable just above the starter motor, then felt the end of it. AH!!! A cable not connected to something is not doing it's job.

So I felt around and found something to push it onto.

Turned the key....





BBBBBBUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM.:D :D :D

Well more splutter..splutter..putt...putt... Well it is a 19J.;)

So, any ideas what cable this is and any ideas what I have attached it to? I can't tell you as I can only just see the starter. I am thinking it's either the Earth Lead or something to do with the Immobiliser.

I know I might be asking too much as each vehicle is different but any advise is always welcome.

This Fred to me reads:
Having starting problems,changed glow plugs,started first time,jobs a good un!!A lead then fell off starter motor or was already badly conected,wunt start so you charged yeh battery & replaced new glowplugs with old ones found a lead off the starter put it back and you now have starting problems:confused:

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that you are back at square one:rolleyes:
 
Sounds like that cable is the wee one that tells the starter motor to squirm into action.

They fall off frequently, and then there's NO starter operation.
Squash it a little with pliers to make it a bit tighter, and shove it back.

Hi Jason,

Not really square one.

I now know how to remove and fit glow plugs with my eyes closed.
I now know that when you own a defender you will spend more time fixing it than driving it.
I now know that if you fix one thing it breaks another.
I also now know that if someone has a problem then there are people that can advise you.

I will be changing the plugs to the new ones tomorrow and seeing what my offroad day at Matchams (Ringwood) brings.

You have one CABLE OFF, AND LO AND BEHOLD there is ONE EMPTY lucar connector blade just sitting there looking at you, and all lined up with the loose connector on the wire ....

How "lucky" do you need to get?

I only say lucky because I can't see anything but the bottom right corner of the starter.

I can't see the cable let alone the connector.

I think the fact that I found the cable and not got my LR Mechanic to change the starter is quite lucky.;)
