Hello gents;
Good day people, there is a knock coming from underneath the truck when driven over bumps and uneven terrains.
it is more like metal hiting metal than a knock.it is heard from the center area till backward area of the truck.i have checked bushings, trail ram,and everything related to the rear axle articulating moving parts, and nothing.the rear shocks are new and even before replacing them this kind of a knock was present.
i went under the truck, shaked the exhaust up and down left and right violently but no knock coming, and tried to move and shake the fuel tank but no sound.only noticibal play in the rear brakes caliper was noticed and
when moved by hand they r knocking but not the knock i hear.
when the truck is parked and i shake it left to right violently no knock is heard, also pushing on top of the bumper up and down shaking the truck,no knock is heard.
heat shields rattles,cat rattles,these 2 wont cause a knock.
i hit the rear bumper with force with my hand, no knock heard.
i have narrowed the knock like when something hit the drive shaft, like when there is play in the shafts and they rattle on bump, well this knock i hear is very close to the play in the shafts like when u turn a wheel off the ground and hear the knock,it is kind of rattling knock.
checked the shafts there is little play in them i assume it is normal, what could be hitting the drive shafts to make it knock in case the drive shafts are the cause.
i am getting dizzy trying to figure it out,i even took it to the specialist and checked everything from down with no success.
when car is on descents and hitting a bump it will not knock, only when car is leveled and hitting a bump,or going up a hill and hitting a bump,i will hear the knock.when windows are closed u can't hear anything.
Ideas?
thank you gents.

Inside the transfer box is a chain drive viscious coupling at high mileages it needs replacing.
:welcome2: ow u mean the unit that self locks when one front wheel spins more than the other, thus the silicone gel inside ot it will expand and lock it?
the one than makes the car shake like an old man when u turn ur wheels if it is knackered?the one that if needs replacement the way to test it is to jack one wheel off and try to turn it by hand and if it is knackered the wheel wont turn?
guess that's the one,but the vc is fine, truck has 120k kms on the clock.
thank you.

cheers claw, care to elaborate more?the knock is heard from the rear center area and rear of the truck.
it must b somtg related to suspension or chassis to body bolts,or drive shafts.but all these bolts and stuff seems very tight.

hi jorjio,hope you get your motor sorted,but please please STOP calling it a truck,it aint a truck,it is a landrover/rangerover,but not a bloody truck.ok rant over.:D:D:D;)

hi jorjio, consider yerself told off,now get back to fixing your range rover.you know you want too.:D:D:D;)
I wish i can gems.even the mech didn't figure it out!!! Every time i drive the fooker in the neighbourhoud and go on a bump the fooker makes people's head turn and makes me shy!!! Is it so hard to figure it out?y no one seems to know abt the pro?

Suppose you have looked at the anti roll bar links?

as you can imagine j,it is hard enough tracing faults on a rangy when you have got the vehicle to look at.it is nigh on impossible to do it over the internet.the best way is to keep asking on here then go and try what has been suggested by the lads on the forum.good luck with it anyway.;)

Hi wammers my friend.i have looked at them,i even used a lever 2 find out if there is play in any of the joints bushes, the links are 4 the front anti roll bar as i have changed them both in the front, the knock is in the rear area, although i feel it starts from the almost centre 2 rear area.it isn't getting worse, when rangy is on the bump stops it is defo a stronger knock especialy when the rear wheels get over the bump not when hitting it.and if driven at speed over the street bump (au normal height)when the front wheels touch the bump,i hear the knock from center 2 rear like it is transmited.the knock is mostly noticed when the whole rear axle moves.if hitting the bump from one side there is no knock.i have noticed also when i was under rangy that the rear height sensor links if moved by hand they r rattling, there is no grease on them, could they make such a strong knock when hitting a bump?cheers

THAT was my train of thought lowfat ... (goin over a bump with the chain stretched/loose ect) .. the "CLUNK" could be the chain jumpin a tooth ect ect ....or rather it "Grabbin" a tooth again & pullin up tight on the prop
cheers claw,so the transfer case must be opened and the chain checked.that's defo a job not for me.

Can't it be verify trough the draining or refilling hole(the chain tension)? I sure, that is something that anyone can do.
