What colour am I

Well, I picked up my series 3 today and drove 85 miles back up the motorway to Preston.
2 questions, would you say the colour is masai red? seems a bit too maroon to me.
Passenger door has no key to lock so I assume it is locked from the inside. There is a splined knob which I think should push in to stop the handle moving? this knob doesn't push/pull go up or down. Am I just a numpty newbie or do you have any suggestions
The bulkhead is galvanized!-bonus



What is the purpose of the horizontal bar with the number plate on it? Please don't say it's holding it all together!!

Looks like Masai Red to me or perhaps a locally mixed respray of same.

Unless it's been refitted with Series II/IIA door locks the locking mechanism should be a sliding catch internal to the door lock mechanism. Any chance of a photo?

If it has been refitted, then the catch you describe should push in and turn 90 degrees to lock, then do the same to unlock.

nice truck, +1 on ditching the checker plate, can't stand the stuff.

is it just the bulkhead thats galv'ed or the chassis too?

how much was it or is that a rude question.
 
Darius, that's the problem. the knob doesn't go in or out. anyway I haven't tried the molegrips or hammer yet.!
like yourself and honolulujoe, the checker plate will be getting dumped but on a budget you have to compromise on something.
And yes honolulujoe it was rude to ask. However if you buy me a few beers I'll probably blabber it all out:)
 
OK, that is an old Series IIA lock - it's not the antiburst type.

Spray it with penetrating oil and work the knob ('oo 'eck!) in and out and round to see if it loosens up. Be gentle with it - that knob is only pot metal - no rough stuff.

Were it me, though, I'd be thinking about Series III antiburst locks - just did that on my 110 recently.

The bar with No plate on may have held spot lights at some stage. I put something similar on my series three for the lamps and it does stop the plot flapping about a bit.

I'll give the penetration oil a go and thanks for the heads up on the antiburst locks.
 
Yep. The sills arrive next week. The problem is I don't know which colour it is. I've emailed heritage with chassis number. they come back to me on Monday with the colour code. Probably originally white!!
