What am I missing?! r380 w/ short bellhousing

I have owned my landy for just over a year now and had very little go wrong with it (apart from the gearbox mainshaft going :eek: ). After having it serviced recently I have noticed a few oil patches underneath which I didn't have before.

So I took a look underneath and found that a plug of some sort appears to have fallen out/ not been put back. Could someone please tell me what it is that's missing so I can ask the garage to fix it?

It is an ex mil defender 110 with a short bellhousing r380 onto a 2.5na

That your bell housing drain point, it should only have bolt in It if you are wading, otherwise leave it out so any oil coming out the back of the engine drains out rather than contaminating the clutch.

If you have oil dripping out of there it's probably the rear crank oil seal leaking on the engine
 
Ah fair enough, there was definitely oil dripping out and as you can see in the pic quite a bit spraying back over the rest of the bellhousing and the cylindrical (crossmember?) on the left of the shot. Is it a big job then?
 
Yes!

Remove the prop shafts, remove the gearbox, remove the clutch, then drop the sump remove everything off the end of the crank, drop the back bearing, change the seal, then put it all back together again.

With all the right gear, you might be able to do it in a day ;)

Or ...


Keep an eye on your oil levels and top up as required :D:D:D

And leave the timing cover wading hole open!
 
Is your engine oil level dropping? It could also be ATF from the gearbox, if it is the first you will know about it is when the oil level in the gearbox gets low enough to cause gearbox damage.
I would (very quickly) try and figure out if it is gearbox or engine oil, shorty R380's are very thin on the ground and you will have a hell of a job finding a replacement.

Also , check the back of the sump, a leak here can look as though it is coming from the bell housing. Clean it all up spotless and dry (I use paraffin in a kitchen spray bottle all over the engine and sump then chuck a bucket of hot water with fairy up liquid over it to rinse, engine comes up a real treat) then go for a little drive, if it is coming from above the drain/wading hole this will show it up.
For years I thought my rear crank seal was letting past and always thought I'd do it with the next clutch change, turned out to be the sump.
 
To add to the list, could also be clutch fluid from a leaky slave cylinder. Whatever fluid it is will be black because of clutch dust

The engine oil isn't dropping, and that stuff is black when you check the dipstick. This oil is fresh looking so I'm assuming its gearbox oil, Im not sure why it would be leaking because I had her fully serviced less than 2 months ago by specialists (Dunsfold Landrover) and they didn't point out any work that needed doing.

I know what you mean about replacements because I had the mainshaft in it go a few months back and they had to replace it rather than swap gearboxes!

How would I check the gearbox oil level?
