No, they went over to electronic ignition as soon as possible. I am a fan of the Jap classics, but they weren't as perfect as rose tinted glasses would suggest. Remember the flexi forks, braced only by the flimsiest of pressed steel mudguards :eek::D And the really hard discs and pads that didnt work at all in the wet, skidmark making stuff in more ways than one :D

Brakes were better than the cocoa tins fitted to Triumph's of the period and the forks on the Tiger Cub would ben if the bike fell off the stand:rolleyes:
The TLS drum on the front of my Honda Benly CB92 was huge:)
 
A friend of mine had a benly , he even managed to keep up with our group on a trip up to Mallory park , he had track megas on and we could here him behind us above the sound of our own bikes !! 14000 rpm IIRC :)

my wheels at the time was a tweeked R E 250 Continental GT :D

ps good for 108mph (as verified by XJ6 police car on M4)

Once I put decent tyres on it, it would keep up with most things especially in the wet:D
When the lads at Teds Cafe first saw it thay all laughed, wusses bike with an electric starter, surprised quite a few of them on the race to the roundabout and back. It did have a few tweaks and I had race mega's.
We had a Maserati 50cc race bike, on the way to Brands, I got clocked at 80mph in a 50 limit by a copper on a speed twin, it had taken him some miles to catch me. When he found out it was 50cc he was a bit perplexed, in the end he let me go in exchange for a padock pass.:D
 
Still weighing up a shogun/Pajero.
If I thought we could buy a reliable p38 I'd consider it, I find it bizarre though as when I purchased mine 6years ago everybody said I shouldn't have and should have bought a mitsubishi or a Toyota.
I was always told to avoid the 4.6 so that said would a 2.5 or a 4.0 be better suited for my missus considering it's for towing?
What's the p38 4wheel drive system like to live with?

Ha ha, No we haven't looked at anything yet, missus uses her sisters truck when needed but she wants to get something in the new year as she wants to compete more.
Going to look at a 2.8 manual lwb shogun sun belongs to a mates dad done 60k.

Both need to be good to start with, and well maintained, if not work will be needed. Difference is the parts for the Jap will be likely be horrendously expensive. Landies are probably a bit easier for the home mechanic too.

I wouldn't particularly slate shoguns, they are of a muchness with other Jap 4wd, and will be fine if looked after and light use. As a working vehicle the only ones I really think are good are the Land Cruisers and the little Suzi Jeeps in the more base models.

I know a few people who have Jap 4wd, and seen a few broken by farm use, and they will not go some places where my 90 will, although that is probably not an issue for you. :)

My last Pajero/Shogun was auto and had something like 180K miles on it (if I rememeber correctly) when I got rid of it because I couldn't register it in France. I bought it with about 150K on it, never had a moments trouble, I also had a Hyundai Galloper which was an old model Pajero made under licence, I did lots of trouble free miles in it. I've had a P38 for the last 5 years, it's had lots of niggles but the worst failure was the RAD on my last UK trip, so not a bad record.:) Lots more cheap parts available for LR products and also lots more useful advice on forums.:)

Yes, they are nearly all pathetically unreliable.

I realise this is a LR site and I have a soft spot for them too but come on.

Here's my opinion of the modern land rovers

Defender 300 great, gave me little problems, agricultural
Discovery the devils bastard born of a range rover, top heavy piece of crap that as I have said before, should have been binned in 94 and continued the RR classic instead. Td5 auto totally unsuited to the engine. Crap head
P38 diesel asthmatic
P38 v8 have enough left over for fixing a slipped liner
L322 my dad has one, costs a bloody fortune to maintain
Never owned a freelander

I do like classic range rovers and currently own one but I'd need to spend the full budget on one that would meet with my wife's approval.

I've had few subarus and what I liked about them was that I just drove them and changed the oil every now and then. Completely alien concept to the average LR owner.
Always got rid before the timing belt was due, its a big job.

My mate pulls a nag around with a forester 2.0xt, my last one was a 2.5xt 225bhp 236ftlb. Has the same ground clearance as a freelander. Oh I tell a lie, I also replaced an anti roll bar drop link during the time I owned this one, bloody jap crap.

4.7 jeep engine suffers from severe valve seat recession running on LPG.

Nothing asthmatic about the P38 diesel, just a very odd throttle response, mine is way quicker than the Shogun, Galloper or Fourtrak that I have owned previously, but as you say, not exactly trouble free.
