What’s this wire?

Theres a black wire connected to the brown alternator cable on my 200tdi Defender 90.

Any idea what it does? Tried tracing it but lost it somewhere into the engine bay. Must be power to something.

I should say which end! It’s on the same terminal as the alternator on the starter battery.

Black is the standard earth colour - which is saying "bodge" to me.

Thanks chaps. Yeh must be a bodge powering something. I’ve dosconnected and I’ll see what doesn’t work when I get the rest back together
