Ok quick run down sorry if it’s a wrong place or already discussed thread, I just a grasshopper.

2007 freelander 2 2.2d

Crank seal went , oil over fecking everything .
Crank pulley also had a mad wobble
The timing tensioner had also slipped.

got everything off and cleaned and new parts back on. all pulleys ,all tensioners ,all belts ,
Went to do the new crank shaft pulley and it didn’t fit .
The two pulleys are different , my sensor ring is the screw out type and the pulley is just centred on the snout of the crankshaft with the bolt and washer. where as the new crank pulley is keyed for the crank .

What’s the story here ?
1. If I get the other type of sensor trigger disc should the new pulley then fit in place and has anyone tried this.
2. Is there two engine variants?

this seems to be a weird subject across all of this variant of Fomoco engine . Just looking to see if there’s any wise owls that can enlighten me with some more gossip on the situation .

ps this is my first thread so I’ll hold off on my rant about the oil filter .

Yup,
There seems to be two variants of pulley and crank sensor timing ring for the same crank shaft.
Just hitting out to see if any ones come across this and just plain swapped both out for the two different ones with out any issue before I fork out on one and a new crank bolt and a new world of misery locking it up again.
It’s the Ford variant engine and it seems to be quiet a mysterious one across them all.
Like they tried a keyless crank pulley and it turned out to be a disaster and then changed it during production to one with a key way and then had to change the sensor disc also

I've never seen the early pulley or target ring.
They all seem to be the later type on the engines I've seen.
There is a still a key, as the target ring and cam pulley and later damper puller are located by the key.
The early pulley didn't locate with the key, simply relying on friction from the bolt pressure.
The later pulley is used in conjunction with the later and thinner target ring, so you can't mix n match early and late components.

Thanks for that. So I should be able to take the earlier ring and pulley off no problem and replace them with the later with out any issue?
Can absolutely see why they changed that design. Can’t rely on friction alone .

There’s a few dings and dints in the current old type ring that I think is the cause of sluggish idle. And yeah cause it’s the friction pulley it doesn’t seem to be dead on centre no matter how hard you try always is a slight bit off and gives a bit of up and down on the pulley movement. It’s also got soaked with oil so it’s on its way out anyway .

Yes. The later pulley can be supplied is a kit with the new target ring and bolt IIRC.

I believe the friction pulley is from the original PSA application, and was acceptable for that. Actually quite a lot of vehicles use friction only to drive the accessories.
However the Freelander 2 is available with a 180 Amp alternator, which combined with the PS pump can pull over 10 Hp from the engine. With this amount of power, the friction drive is going to be marginal at best, which is why I suspect the later keyed pulley was developed.

You absolute legend. And thank you so much for the added information as that fills in the blanks in my head.
I shall be ordering my self a new ring as I have the pulley and ordered an extra bolt when I was doing the timing belt and that as I wasn’t sure about the pulley thing and had an inclination that I may have to put the old one back on and revisit once I knew more.
Now I know it all. This is my next car Sunday venue into the big hippo lump.
Thank you again

I've a feeling the crank sensor might be different too. But can't remember as I've only ever seen the later type. The early type wasn't fitted on the production line for long, as cars from MY2008 and later all have the redesigned pulley.

I’ll let Ye know. I ordered a set ( crank ring and sensor) should probably get a stab at it this Sunday so I will report back with my findings.
