Just reporting on my findings after a couple of choice mods and a service on the 2001 TD4 auto.

The other day I took the engine to bits to have a gander and see what was what. I knew it needed a service, it came with no service history but I wasn't sure how bad it actually was.

I Changed the oil and filter, air filter, coolant, turbo breather filter, fuel filter - what a pig to get out. While I was there I fitted an EGR blanking plate and a bmw crank case breather vortex thing.

All I can say, the air filter was black and dusty, the oil was very thin and very black, the crank case tissue paper type filter was a real mess - absolutly saturated, the fuel filter felt very gritty and there were a lot of particles of some sort coming out of it.

I have just put some STP diesel injector cleaner as it wasn't expensive although I am not expecting miricles. I still have black smoke but it doesn't seem as bad. My mate (who did the service with me) said he thinks the injectors are probably dirty. He said to get some forte diesel injector cleaner when I can. I asked him about taking the inlet manifold off but as we were at his house he wouldn't have had the stuff to clean it.

All I can say is that the low down pick up is much better. It actually shifts now. Feels so much better. Definitely more responsive. I dread to think when it was last serviced.

Also looked at the central locking and he took it to bits and said my central locking motor was dying. It was still trying to work but wasn't working enough. Oh and he fixed my rear door latch today. Closes much better.

So I'm on the look out for a near side front central locking motor hint hint...
