So great... take the kids outside to play stupid games dressed in shorts in the snow... but god forbid they should learn skills for life!:doh:

Kai's 11... and I know I go on a bit about him... but he can fix the car and change the clutch. weld small areas (not pretty but good enough for the mot man), he can drive and effect recoveries with practical guidance, and he cooks.

What does the school suggest as educational support...

"Well Mr T.... we DO have an egineering group at lunchtimes..."

"Great he'll enjoy that... what do you do....."

"We have a few sets of mechano...."

I had to leave the room... this was the headmaster of reputedly the best school in Dunstable speaking.

i read the thread, and if i think i can offer assistance, i will.
it's mildly annoying when the thread asks for help and the op dosent give any hint of a location. if it sounds interesting then i'll ask where they are.

i am not a professional motor engineer, but work (self employed) as an electro mechanical engineer.(industrial machinery)
me and a few mates rent a workshop for our hobby of landrovers, and between us have acquired various bits of kit, inc a 4 poster ramp, which for beer tokens and nominal charge for any materials used, let other people use it either for their own work, or with us helping if they want. in most cases one of us will be presant for help/supervision with use of equipment.
this is the first time i have actually advertised this due to personal commitments, and as i say, usually decide who i offer to help on reading the threads.
if i start getting crank calls from this, i'll have to delete it, but in with the original post, i think this is what he's getting at.

Pretty much what we concluded, but it was almost 2 in the morning when I came along and the road, though not highly used, is usually quite busy. Only fences nearby so not rolled off a drystone dyke and it just happened to land in a dip which your headlights don't hit until you are in it.

Basically, I've always thought it wasn't accidental, probably some arsehole's idea of a prank, if it hadn't been almost 30 years ago, I'd have thought it was failed hi-jack type attempt. I know I once put a toilet seat in the middle of a road as a prank, my mates and I were driving along and spotted it lying on the verge, apparently it had been dumped, so we helpfully re-sited it in the middle of the road should anyone be in dire need of taking a dump we were teenagers then (though no excuse really.) BUT it was put out in full view on a level straight bit of road. Though, on retrospect, putting anything out on the road was really stupid of us, I've never forgotten that rock, maybe it haunts me because of the toilet seat thing, and I've always hoped that our stupid idea never caused anyone any harm.

well we already do it, just we choose who we invite, not the other way round!

on a serious note, it can get a bit tedious sometimes. things crop up and we have to cancel, we've had people in that just want the facilities and when they've turned up found out they dont even know how to take a wheel off, let alone know how to sort their original problem out, then we end up having to do it for them.
sometimes we're appreciated and "tipped well", others just expect everything.
thats why we decide now.

we even had one that couldnt reverse onto the ramps.......

as for the kids, on numerous occasions we've run the scouts mechanics badge for the local troop.
and yeah, 10-14 year old kids love it!

well for what it is worth, i think its a good idea, i am new to the forums, welding, landrovers etc etc etc and do find it difficult to ask for help with things, if there was a list with locations that would be great, i know a lot of people are members of clubs and know people through people but for us 'billy no mates' it would be ideal - this could also carry on to other things which us landy people always on the scrounge lol
but this is only my opinion.

nowt wrong with it, if your post comes across as genuine then people respond.
its the one line posts with little info i look at and move on to the next.
you took the time to find out how to upload pics, gave definitive info, and it caught my attention.
end of the day i have stuff to do as well and i dont want to spend all my time supervising 8 numpties all trying to use our facilities. rather keep it more informal and get reasonable quality.

hey ng get your coat youve pulled lol - think the whole idea of help and advise is certainly worthwhile, facilities and special tools is an added advantage, although i dont think that you would want my beast moving in anytime soon as it may still be there in 20 years time lol

3 have been there since 2004 when we took it on.
ones mine and moves occasionally.
ones a mates and moves when he thinks about doing summat with it.
and the other mates has moved about twice, cos it were in the way.

and we seem to have inherited a dead ldv luton that no one knows whats happening to it......

I'm still in 6th form. Our school is an engineering college but I still don't feel like people are doing enough. I'm lucky to be on very good terms with my old technology teachers so I'll often pop into technology and use one of our two laser cutters and do some electronics work for the landy. I can pretty much do what I want because he knows I know what I'm doing but that's only because I've actively chosen to go in my own spare time to work. I haven't even taken technology this year. Obviously because we are an engineering college, everyone has to take a gcse in technology but that includes catering (yeah right) and textiles (oh dear).
If it was up to me welding would be forced at school... but then again thinking about all of the people who were in my year last year, the workshops would have probably burnt down several times and we would have had regular trips to hospital with flash because they "couldn't see very well so they took the mask off" or something stupid like that.
It's lucky that they made it really hard to get into 6th form this year because we have a new head. It really has made the school better because you know everyone in 6th form actually wants to be there.
Learning about engineering was never an option for me, I was given a drill and let loose in the garage at about 5. I think it was because I was my Granddad's first grandson I became like a project
There's always been a classic car in the garage for me to play with. Come to think of it I could have done some serious damage because I was always made to figure stuff out for myself.
My uncle was also a mechanic at BMW who then sent him to Land Rover and he's been at honda, the aa, the rac, snap on and taught the aa and rac and mechanics in Dubai. He's now teaching mechanics back in england.

Guy I don't know turns up with a welding set, he starts welding my Landy and it bursts into flames.

Who pays for it, If I get mr mobile welder out he'll have a trade insurance policy, inviting uninsured strangers to weld your car could be a bit risky

thats why you have a fire watcher. insured or not. and the means of putting it out. and you have a 1 hour safe time at the end of hot works.

depends how much you want to pay, and how much you want to learn.

and common sense falls into too, somewhere.

translated it means you watch for smoke with a bucket of water handy, and spend an hour or so putting the tools away and sweeping up after finishing the welding

He could teach you, set the welder up and then you weld it yourself
