I was thinking about this, when i read a post about a guy wanting an alternative to welding for his Landy, well if i'm honest there isn't any, and i'm sure the Mot man will agree.

Well that got me thinking, i'm a Fabricator by trade and can weld steel and Aluminium and have my own welding set, we could agree for those members who want to take part to help other Landy owners for a nominal fee.

Not only could this help out other landy owners but, it would allow them to get their welding done by another landy owner without getting ripped off at the garage, we could perhaps add a new field to the profile to show that we are "Willing To Weld" and add a location?

Do you think something like this could work, and would people use such a service??

It'll be interesting to know eitherway ;)

Could work but you only have 14 posts so people are going to take this as you trying to make some money for yourself.

No, its for everyone anyone that can weld, Would take part, i personally have very little time as i tend to build bridges and Mobile Phone Masts for a living, But in general with a forum this size, the amount of people who can weld, who are will to help others, it could work ;)

This is the type of work i do....

I do not believe that this would work. The reason is simple:

There are very few people on this forum who do not have welding equipment AND do not know anyone close to them who can weld. In my own case... while I have the kit for small jobs and am not particularly good; I know that I can call on several people within a 15 minute drive who would help.

In addition, even if I didn't know anyone who would help, the fact is that if I were to post on here that I was having trouble... there are members who will go out of their way without pay to help eachother out. It may not look like it from reading some of the threads - but honestly it is the way things seem to work on here.

Oh and for the record... even if it were a method of you trying to make a few quid or drum up a little business... as long as you are active on the forum no one would mind I don't think.

The difference would be that from posting... and putting your credentials in your sig... people will realise that you know what you are talking about and will naturally ask for advice. from that can come business... but it will only be small business; better for publicity than for readies.

I have experienced the same thing. From time to time people ask about tracking or machine to machine communication. I don't shout about it all the time but if they ask I try to give them the best advice I can... once or twice people have come to me for tracking... but as a business investment, 3500 odd posts would be a hell of a time committment for a few small jobs.

Thanks Ryder but being a Director of an Engineering company i'm not looking to make a a few quid, I just thought it would be a novel way for forum members to help each other on a nationwide basis, its not about me but the forum on a whole ;)

I should have been clearer...wasn't casting aspersions or anything... just trying to outline the way it works. What might work... and I can't be sure...would be one of two things:

A master class in welding with an invitation to forum members, obviously a contribution to costs would be perfectly legit...

Or... (and here I get shot down in flames)... A class aimed at youngsters. I know the anger I feel at my sons school because they will not endorse any kind of metal work tuition and yet he welds and works here at home. Having people available to teach the youngsters more than we can on the subject would be a welcome opportunity.

And perhaps he would get his finger out and weld my boot up into the bargain!

Cool ;)

Its a sad case of affairs especially in engineering in the UK now, There dosn't seem to be any interest from school leavers to go into engineering. and yet people seem to sit back and let these youngsters go on the dole or getting a part time job at tesco's.

Where are the careers people and Careers fair that we used to have at school in the 80's, Now there seems to be less and less encouragement for kids to learn a skill or trade, 100 years ago, the UK was the Market Leader in Engineering, Telford, Stevenson, Brunel and loads more transformed engineering, now we've lost it all :(

There should be some extra funding from the lottery into training kids from 14 upwards skills such as welding, mechanics and other Trades and not give £250,000 of lottery funding to help Gay illegal imigrants stay in the country, because they will be tortured in there own country

This might be a silly question, but how are you going to get that large erection out of the workshop? not using the 4 tonne crane surely?

Ha Ha, The bridge breaks down into 3 parts with all the interal steelwork simply bolted on, In fact there are 2 overhead cranes of 4 tonnes each, we move the pieces out the workshop using both cranes and the the lorry crane takes over

Easy when you know how. Will make an album later and add the rest of the pictures ;)

This is what it'll look like when its done http://www.getmemedia.com/ideas/arc...y-with-the-trafford-arch/jcdecaux-uk-ltd.html if you click on download attachment you'll see a powerpoint page with what the finished bridge looks like

You can't say that, they have rights-even if they like human excrement penis diving. Can you take a **** stabber seriously? same as the religious loonies.

Is there a video so I can verify your claims.

On a similar subject -

The age old problem with corrosion on the doors of discoveries (and probably others) due to metal inner and alloy outer, why has no one as far as I know came up with a metal outer door skin as a replacement.
Think originally reasons for the alloy outers was for weight reasons but as good 2nd hand doors are becoming less and less - I think there must be a market.
The weight difference can't be that much.

The schools thing bugs be too, when I went to school we had two fully equipped metalwork rooms and every lad could use a lathe, shaper, forge, weld etc to a certain level. We didn't have showers or a gym and had to share text books but we could do practical stuff. 30 years later my sons both went to the same school now fully equipped with 2 gyms and IT facilities, the metalwork rooms are still there but not used, its far too dangerous in these days of health and safety to let schoolboys learn anything useful.:(

In principle, I like the idea suggested in this thread, though I would extend it to include anyone willing to help others in any way they can, use of Diagnostic tools or even just a helping hand etc.

But, I see one major drawback. I also have a small mig welder and a plasma cutter, and, though I am confident enough to do small jobs for myself, I would be a bit concerned if I was asking Joe Bloggs around the corner to do work for me if I didn't know that he was a capable person and able to do the job. It could be a painful, or expensive way to find out that Joe, though very helpful and obliging, couldn't weld worth a damn but burned holes in my good metal which need to be repaired as well now.

Clan, I think you raise a good point. However we could be in a situation, for example where: A qualified welder (over qualified from the looks of this thread), is willing to offer help; If it were a computer problem then I would offer meself up and there are those on here who could vouch for me. I think the same applies to general mechanics.

I guess what I am trying to say is that for professionals to offer help is one thing... for amateurs to say that they are good enough when they are not might well be a safety issue.

however, the one thing that is almost universally lacking for most of us young (broke) landy owners is that of space. I am lucky that I have a friend with a warehouse who will let me use one corner if I need to for a day at a time... which is great for small jobs... I just wish I could be sure that renting a workshop between a half dozen of us would be a straightforward simple thing that would work. Unfortunately I think politics would end up spoiling the friendships and so working on the drive for the most part is the way things end up.

There are two issues here - one is a professionally competant person wishing to assist (and possibly increase their business) at a negotiated fee (or free) and who has professional indemnity or insurance cover and two - a guy who has done the job before, maybe has a bit of a skill set who is willing to help and give the benefit of his knowledge.
There is a world of difference betwen the two.

I for one, like to have on hand someone that might have done the job before, who might know any pitfalls or short cuts. That doesnt mean I would hold them legally liable is something went wrong. It would be different if it was a "professional" such as a garage.

Agree with MHM...

I can do most jobs on my 90, but when tackling something new, ideally i would like to have someone around that has done the job before....

the idea of help is a good one, but not sure if it would work...
however, if you want to offer help, you could always teach a new member how to weld?

there's always threads about people that want to buy a MIG but dont have a clue about welding..
I can weld, but my welds arent pretty, so that kind of help would be good for me, someone to show me how to setup the mig properly, when to change the settings depending on the materials..etc,etc...

Yep, as I said, in principle it's a great idea (something like the international rescue thread) I'd love to help others in any way I could, but I'd also be very worried about any comebacks should there be a f**k up, and then there's personal injury etc. I, personally, have assisted many people in the past with roadside breakdowns and have helped many to get going again, I've even towed a few to garages or home etc, in one case I towed an elderly couple quite a few miles to the nearest town when their car hit a rock which had somehow fallen onto a fairly remote bit of road and caved their sump in.

Sadly, at home, I hate to work on any vehicle outside (I live in a block of flats) as it's so annoying when "helpful" passers by offer their words of wisdom and kids ask "whatcha doin' mister?" Therefore, most of my DIY is done either in a nice quiet spot up in the hills outside the town or, in the case of bigger jobs, in my nephew's drive under his car port.

Definitely though, I am all in favour of professional, skilled, semi-skilled & experienced people offering their services or even their facilities.

I for one, would definitely be interested. I can't weld, but would love to be able to pay somebody local, a few quid at mates rates to teach me the basics of welding both steel and ally.

Its a good idea.

From looking at that photo of the bridge in the workshop, i cant help but think of people building kit cars in their shed, only to realise that they cant get the thing out once its built!! Looks really interesting though! If i wasn't in the RAF I'd love a career in engineering or CAD/ CAM etc!

Agree wit MHMs comments. International Rescue BTW isn't an organisation or anything its just a group of us who will help if we can...

It is nice to have a mate around who has done the job before... I guess everyone just gets a little more careful now that we live in a litigous (right word?) society.
