Welding

Any advice please on the ideal gauge of steel to be welding chasis with.

i use 3mm normal mild steel sheet some people use 2mm not man enough if you ask me

I last used a piece of old lamp post inspection panel... not sure of guage! lol.

3mm if you want it to last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you use for snipping the 3mm plate- sounds quite thick.

well im a welder and fabricator by trade so cut mine at work on the Guillotine then weld um on at home or down the workshop, or use a thin cutting disc will **** through 3mm

2 - 3 mm depending on position,

you should use the same thickness as the material your working with , so if the chassis is 3 mm use 3mm,

hope ther cut in flush not over lapped or yer askin fer more trouble

You can get nibblers on eblag to cut the sheet, scrap merchants are good for sheet steel in odd sizes, or you can go down the street late at nite with a wrecking bar and rob some street light covers.
I usually weld a bit on in one corner and then shove the rest around what I'm welding it to or bash it with a mallet, if you plan it right you can use the heat from welding to help.

What thickness of steel can you cut with the nibblers.

The ones Ive seen only cut upto about 1.25mm or 18gauge?

3mm is easiest cut with a plasma cutter or a gas axe but you will end up with slag

or a 1mm cutting disc

hahaha is that whrere i went wrong then , cuttin with gas fer all these years then met me missus


seriously tho, the plasma slag just taps off to leave a nice finish if the tips are in good nick , i likes me plasma more than me gas now

bout 1.6 fer shears and slightly more fer nibblers

if you do much work with snips or shears you will end up looking like popeye!

i int noticed , i use those long handle shears, the foot print ones, not yer cheap **** , they dunt give yer bad wrists either,

but the grinder or gas is a lot easier

i had a set of record ones about a foot long after cutting sheet fer a while yer still know ya done it

ah kno, but it dunt bother me really , tis called work , its a rare thing now and a lot of people dunt kno awt about it

its better if yer grip the bottom handle in a big engineers vice and pull down on the top one, use them as a bench shear, if yer got loads to do

A SET off bench shears from machinemart work a treat for me,mount em on a plate,bracket welded to plate ,bracket held in vice ,,,,,,,,simples,dave
