Evening all,

After finally getting my beloved D1 started (thanks to all who helped with great advice) it was time for the dreaded MOT.
After plenty of prep I took the old girl to be checked knowing the following
1. Outer sills both sides
2. A+B pillars bottom both sides
3. Drivers (o/s) footwell 3 small holes
4. O/S inner wing hole next to bulkhead
5. Rear passengers doors top of wings next to C pillar finger size holes.
Anyway long story short with cambelt replacement slightly overdue £3000 apparently - 33 to 35 hours?
So what are we saying chaps ?
The wife is still in Orbit at the moment....
Am I being naive to expect to pay less? but to me it does seem a lot.
I’m near Worthing so I’m looking for someone or an independent Landy welding specialist who won’t require an organ to rectify all this
We go camping in a few weeks so I need the old girl back on the road
Cheers

That’s a lot of dosh ! Now a good time to buy a mig welder and a bit of kit and get stuck in,
All the panels can be replace or repaired, a great learning experience for you :)
It’s not that difficult once you bite the bullet,

Probably should have mentioned I’ve got a welder + all kit helmet overalls gloves the lot, but due to having another baby a couple of years ago never got round to using it. Pains me to say it as it’s something I know I’d love but the toddler takes up all the hours .
Need someone else to step in this time

I will need my helmet and other armour for this one!
Why not pay a nanny and then spend the time she/he is looking after the nipper doing some welding? Might be cheaper than paying for the welder.
Then again maybe not!;)

It’s all about the time mate. We go away camping in a few weeks and as I’ve basically only unboxed the welder and never gone near my pride and joy I don’t really trust myself. But it’s not off the table it pains me to pay someone else but this time it has to happen

Just thought I’d let you know that after some family stepping in to help with childcare I’m gonna bite the bullet. I know I’ll enjoy welding once I get started and it makes sense in the long run after all

One word of advice is make sure your alternator is disconnected and or Battery before welding as
It will destroy the diodes and be an extra expense,
Good luck with the job and worth buying a couple of cheap 4 inch grinders so you haven’t got to keep changing from
Cutting to grinding then to wire brush, buy only quality cutting discs,
There are plenty of tutorials on this website to help you on your way but if not sure just ask away,

Cheers that’s good advice about the battery etc that would’ve been a nightmare
The extra grinder definitely makes sense as changing the discs has been a pain already.
Really appreciate your help so far
Cheers
