Hi all,

Aquired an 1995 auto 300tdi Disco 1 at the weekend. For 18 years old it's mechanically good and took me back down the M1 to home with no problems. Was a business mans vehicle, got a full service history covering up to last year, various invoices etc showing what it's had done to it.

Most of the vehicle chassis sills etc are all good. There are a couple of patches, one on the sill and one on an inner arch. The biggest issue I found was the sopping wet foam rubber mat in the back.....ripped that out to find some corrosion mainly to the near side side panel and some near tne edge of the main boot floor. Obviously a leak but as it was raining at the time I couldn't see where from. My guess is the roof panel area on the guttering where it meets the side panel. Sunroofs are sealed up.

The boot has been patched before, but I would like to get the whole lot replaced once I've cured the leaks.

I've never really welded, and live in a flat so my garage is well away from my home, with no power. Having researched the forums briefly in between DIY punishment, I have a good dea of what I need to do. But can see that things are stacked against me ie no workshop, power etc. I'm resigning myself to having to fork out to a garage, and would greatly appreciate any recommendations in the Essex area of places that won't hit me too hard for price lol. Any ball park figure for a replacement including side floor panels would be brilliant so I at least know what to expect when I get some quotes. Goes without saying if anyone wants some extra dough or can recommend anyone I'd be more than happy to see them right, and hopefully learn the basics in preparation for the inevitable next lot of welding required lol

Sorry for the long post!

Andy

Dont you have any family or friends that could let you plug in otherwise the welding could be expensive, but you say it doesnt need much so get some quotes first and see how you get on

Yes I think quotes are the first port of call. Think I've located the source of the leak. Looks like it's where the panels meet under the little gutter. Water drips out from under the rear speakers. Everyone I've spoken to so far has said it doesn't look that bad. It's had previous welding patches done in there.

Well having seen those photos if it were me I would be replacing the boot floor and both side pieces, plus the floor support cross pieces.

Just to give you an idea of costs: the above repairs on their own will add up to about £200. Then you've got the cost of someone to do the work for you.

When I got our first TDi, it was a 200, it needed about the same work as yours and I got a quote from the local body guy. The figure he quoted takes into account that I would have supplied the new parts and removed the boot myself, prior to taking it in for him to weld the new panels in: 660 euros !!!!!

I didn't have the money, so I did it myself and to be honest I was quite proud of the end result.

This is the article I wrote when I did a new boot floor without welding. If I was doing it today I would be new side pieces with the 'shelf already prepared.
