Welder advice

Looking to get a mig welder, on the cheapside, new. I have been looking for used ones but never really found anything ideal that is within a reasonable distance from me. New to welding so looking for some advice on this one below:

Cheap, but I have been happy with Draper stuff in the past. I need one that's fairly easy to use for noobs and will do a fair amount of varied work. I'm not looking at doing any chassis work soon. My rear door frame coud use some work for example. I bought a REALLY cheap Arc welder a little while back but it kept overheating so took it back to the shop.

gas is easier, better weld, no slag

Personally I don't see why gasless gets so much flak as I found mine okay. Specially as I don't have a workshop to get the full landy in for perfect welding conditions so gasless works for me there.

Yes there's more smoke, splatter and slag but all that can be sorted and most places we've welded isn't seen. Another benefit is no £75 for a hobby gas bottle or £40 for a regulator. We use both as there are times it's better.

Agree on the power though. You may not want to weld chassis now but you may in the future and even some brackets are thick enough where more power is needed.

Might get shot in flames but here's our first weld on an outrigger gasless.

A Better one gas/gasless,gas for indoor welding,gasless for welding outside.Best to get one with more ampage.

Would agree. It's the setup I went for. 190amp for me

Right - what amp rating do you think I should be looking for, for a noob? Being new to it, I really don't want to spend too much at the moment. By the sounds of it, gas / gasless combo seems the way to go, more money no doubt

i'd say min 130 if you want to do landy chassis, but if you can go 150+.

however, a decent 130 is better than a cheapo 150.. so y'know... migwelding read reviews

looking for used is a good way to gi, especially if it's a known brand as parts can be bought.

Is SIP a respected make? Been looking at one of there gas /gas less migs, we've got a sip spot welding machine at work that seems to work well ( provided you remember to turn the water cooling on :doh: ), done 1000s upon 1000s of welds over the years.

If your new to welding,a mig will be easier to learn with.Sick welders need a bit more practice,plus a mig is mutch easier for stop/start welding and spot welding.

I,used to weld with an arc but now I want shielding gas so I got me a mig

Just brought a Clarke 150 te mig
from Machine Mart on a VAT free day.
Even my welding looks good!!
