Hello all,

I've got a 1999 4.6HSE.

I've recently started to have a funny noise. It's not unlike a big fly buzzing-its like a vibration sound.. If I rev the engine its not there, but when I accelerate you can hear it. When cruising it cannot be heard. It appears to be coming from the top of the dash-but noise can travel. Altering the fan speed does nothing. Someone suggsted it could be a loose windscreen trim-but I cannot find anything.

All the best

Steve Brookman

Hello and thanks Rob for the replies.

Around the time the noise started I had the transfer box oil and the transmission oil and gearbox filter changed -. Could this have anything to do with it?

Many thanks

I had to have a new windscreen a while ago on 1998 P38 and it was done by an Independant mobile service, afterwards anything over 50 - 70 mph depending on wind I got exactly what you are describing.

A week later before I could investigate it properly I then needed another windscreen due to a massive impact from a stone dropped off a motorway bridge ( thank god it wasn't any bigger..and that I didn't find the scroats who did it, as I'd either be dead or locked up:mad: )

Auto Windscreens did the job this time at the workshop and discovered half the original trim fastners were missing top and bottom of screen and that the trim had been been bodged on with wads of screen sealant and was evidently leading to the bottom trim resonating like a reed in a wind instrument once it had an airflow over it. AW were very helpful and ordered new clips from LR at no cost and fitted new clips and also new trims all FOC, at my home, two days later.

If you want to try and sort out yourself if you are careful and patient you can get the bottom and top trim off by removing metal side covers at each edge/side of windscreen. The screws are easily accessed under door seal rubber, and you can then slide top and bottom trims off but be careful and take it easy so you don't break clips or fastners . If you do they are easy enough to get from main dealer and are not an outrageous price. Hope this may help!!

i get exactly the same noise from my DHSE. i removed the windscreen trim last year to renew the plenum filter. i didn't notice any clips or fastners missing. unfortunately i have no idea what the noise is

Thanks again.
Just spoke to another member who says the his noise also started when the gearbox oil and filter was changed.
Could the noise be fluid rushing through the filter?
Many thanks
Steve B.
