Stocked up with waxoyl a few months ago but just got round to starting the job this week. 2012 defender 90, just coming up to 3 years old, passed its first MOT last week. Started by taking the front bumper off earlier this week, good condition on the exposed faces but the hidden faces are rusting badly, so took it to the powder coaters. Pressure water jetted through the chassis box sections using a drain cleaning attachment on the pressure washer, very little crap came out. Shining a torch into the chassis in the few largish apertures indicates there is no corrosion in there yet. Externally the chassis is just starting to show surface rust on the various brackets and outriggers, this is only on welds and the platework is still well protected by the original finish. Stuffed some old bed sheets around the brakes, got the compressor out and warmed up the first litre of waxoyl and fitted the spray gun to the can, first litre went into the chassis ok, working on the driveway with a bit of old carpet to lie on and a large piece of cardboard to move around and catch any drips. Very few drips, most of which got mopped up by my hair as I wriggled about underneath. Refilled the can and started the second litre, nearly had a disaster - the short bit of flexi pipe supplied with the spray gun bent stopping the air flow and all the air pressure went into the can, blew the bottom of the can out of shape but luckily it didn't blow out. Changed the pipe for a length of clear braided hose and carried on, got both long chassis rails done internally. Going to try and adapt a canister off a paint spray gun to work with the underseal gun before doing the cross members tomorrow. Plan is to get all the box sections done internally before the weather breaks at the end of this week. External surfaces will have to wait until the next spell of dry weather, probably next year now as I have left it too late.

Good work! I did mine last year and it's a messy but satisfying job.
It will certainly extend the life of the chassis.

Waxoyl is better if you mix it with 10% gear oil. It makes it creep better and stops it going hard.
But it still doesn't wash off under the wheel arches etc.

I used to use waxoyl all the time a few year's ago and every time without fail it would wash off under the arch's.
My father in law used it religously each year and still his car rusted away.

Mine's been OK. I check it every year, on my last Landy it had started to come off in high impact areas after about four years.

I waxoyled the chassis of my friend's static caravan five years ago and the coating is still intact (90% Waxoyl 10% oil)
It has come off a little at the edges where it is exposed to the Welsh weather all year round, but the coating has remained sticky.

Interesting test on the engine oil coating. I never thought the oil could make matters worse!

Im not sure it can, think of all the land rover chassis you have seen with rust, very few have rust up near the engine because of their leaky nature!
