Hey guys
How do you know if your waterpump has gone?
Ive a disco v8 1995 auto.
Changed thermostat and coolant and now overheated. Could it be fan/ air in system?
How would i check what the issue is?

Thanks guys in advance

Make sure the cabin heater is set to hot and rebleed system.

If there was signs of corrosion in coolant it is possible the new coolant has shifted rusted out gasket

Gone where? There's only three three things, bearing fail, detached or broken impeller and a faulty shaft seal leaking coolant, first two u will hear the last one u will see.

Mine 'went' a few weeks ago.
Stopped off at Doncaster servs on the way to Sheffield for a pee. Disco decided too aswel.

£47 for a new pump. £96.50 for it to be fitted. Because I couldn't get the last 3 bolts out.

Then last week a core plug went. So that was another £61ish IIRC.

If it is leaking then it will either over heat or first you loose heating.

When bleeding mine (done it that many times).

Remove expansion tank cap,
Remove radiator and thermo housing caps,
Fill from the expansion tank until it comes out of radiator,
Replace radiator cap,
Fill some more until it comes out of thermo cap,
Start engine with expansion cap off,
Give all the hoses a good squeeze,

Be careful of the belts and stuff.
First few pumps should lift the level in the tank. Then it will either bubble the air out or just riase and fall.

Cheers everyone thats great. Well i checked the waterpump (just got home now on the back of a recovery truck!) I'm
Guessing it is okay as there is no play and no noise coming from it.
Where is the other plug then on the t stat?
Cheers

That's a bit mis information as u don't have one, so the refill sequence is a bit different. You should not have any issues if your 3.9 is a 300 series as they are self venting.

Ahh no worries cheers mate!
So best way to proceed- open expansion tank and rad filler, top up, run it
For a bit or should i take the return hose off expansion tank and then run engine until its ran through the system?

Just fill rad slowly to overflowing and replace plug. Fill expansion bottle to half way line and replace that cap, as your system is self-venting run engine to build up pressures and when the normal running temperature is reached switch off and leave to cool, remove expansion bottle cap and top up to half way line as necessary and refit cap. Job done.

Hey man sorry me again- did exactly as you said and there was a bubbling sound, so i left the caps off, revved it a few times over about ten mins, lots of bubbles came out so kept going until there was minimal
Bubbles then replaced rad cap. Topped up along the way, revved again, still bubbles and some
Out of the expansion tank, tried revving few more times until it looked like no more bubbles but there is still a bubbly sound!
By this time the temp was up to normal, held the revs for a bit, temp rised slightly, took off the revs temp went down slightly (like 1mm ish on the gauge not accurate i know) then rolled up a leaflet and stuck it in the viscous fan, stopped really easy and I was able to roll it back (started rotating pretty much straightaway again)
Any ideas? Getting a bit desperate now with it being xmas! Only overheats on the motorway but where I am there isnt a good run where i'd have chance to get off if it overheats again
Thanks mate and sorry to come back with more issues!

Sorry to say "we have a problem Houston" and your sounds like a head gasket, u won't get loads of bubbles just by filling the cooling system, one or two may pop up into the expansion tank that's normal which u can see if u have the cap off, but with the cap on air would leave via the caps vent under pressure.
I expect your getting air into the heater matrix as its the highest point and which is what U can hear, then its pushed through the system to the expansion tank.

So after much fettling looks like you are right and the head gasket has gone. Been reccomended steel seal. Bought 2 bottles and will do it once my new rad plug arrives- stupid plastic one snapped!!

Hi

If any doubt go to a garage and get the coolant sniff tested to check for engine gasses in the coolant.
You can also get it pressure tested as well if you wish. Just explain what your symptoms are and almost any garage will do it for you. It does sound like a Head gasket failure to me.
Best bet to get the heads skimmed and pressure tested before refitting

Regards

Jonathan

But Steel seal say they guarantee a fix or your money back. It sounds too good to be true, but does it actually work, and does it cause other problems. So just wondering what the outcome was.
