I'm planning to pop my off-road cherry in the next day or two - plus I'm on the big Salisbury trip next weekend. I've heard all manner of horror stories about water getting into P38s, and was just wondering if there was anything I can do to help matters?

I'm not planning on going swimming with it - just I'd like to be able to traverse the occasion ford (sensible depths!). I've heard that water can get in through the door drain holes, and that the door seals will let some in eventually.

My idea is to tape up the drain holes, and then maybe smear the seals with something like Vaseline, just to help them seal up a bit better. All I want to do is give myself a couple of extra minutes to get myself pulled out if I do get stuck, without flooding the cabin and killing the electrics.

Anybody ever tried anything similar?

Also...wading plugs (it's a 97 DSE Auto). What holes underneath it does it have that need plugging?

i wouldnt worry too much m8 pikey done the route in a standard disco on road tyres and didnt get stuck ...much
the water aint too deep to be worried about especially in a doozil p38

thor had no probs in his td5 110 with no snorkel on saturday

As Wiltshire landyman said fella don't worry your just a bit paranoid, just go and have some fun:D my old p38 was a 4.6 petrol standard and I used to dunk that in some really deep fords never had a prob, you'll be surprised what ya motor can do:)

Just remember, when WLM says he ain't doing it, take that as a good indicator for you not to do it. I learned this lesson on Saturday and am still drying the inside of my Landy.
