Guy's,

Done a search and found plenty of info regarding what happens and how to fix.
My question is this, no problem at the moment but have noticed a louder grumbling noise when I go near the front. Lift the bonnet and it becomes more apparent.
I am pretty sure it is coming from down the front near the belt, and assume the bearings are going.
Is this a common fault and should I monitor, or is there every chance of it just giving out anytime soon
it's a 54 plate l322 approx. 80k and it looks as if it's been there a while to be fair,

Thanks in anticipation

Datatek,

Thanks for your prompt reply.
Are the idle pulley's the ones that take the spare part of the belt so to speak.
And will I need to replace them sooner rather than later, or just let them run for a while ?

Regards

Yes, they tension and route the belt. with the belt off you should be able to feel if one is rough or loose.
Replace ASAP before one lets go. Of course it could also be the water pump, alternator or power steering pump if you are unlucky.

Best idea is to whip the belt off and have a touchy feel. Its quite simple to release the tension. Any sign of roughness from the idler / alternator / water pump etc should be adressed sooner rather than later.

My guess is Water pump bearings. mine went at 135,000 miles. lots of brown water spraying around the radiator area and dripping onto floor! It was an easy fix (pump c. £70 + 3 hrs labour - viscous fan nut was stuck and a b*gger to get off!)
