water pump replacement

HI and good afternoon freelander boffins,
Q is it possible to remove the water pump without removing the cam belt
ie could I just slacken the tensioner enough to slip it off the pump?
I dont really want to replace the belt as it was only replaced 2,000 miles ago.

hi just had mine done today, water pump£29,cam belt kit £60,anti freeze £7,labour£97
£230 ish with the vat normally do all my own repairs but could'nt get pulley bolt out garage said about £150 including the parts but ended up over £230 i'm now lay down in a darkened room weeping

Nothing to stop you re-using the belt if you remove it without damaging it, I'd rather replace it though just for piece of mind. It's substantially cheaper than repairing the damage it can do when it lets go...

I hear what you say and if I am truthfull I will probably re-new the belt as a matter of course ,its just me being lazy.

The manual does make mention of re-using an existing belt and I did just that on an MGF when I had to do a HG about 1k after the belt was replaced, i reused the belt (and fitted a new water pump) and it was fine

I can see why it was £97 labour ,
I have spent nearly all day ..well nine ish to three just getting to a point where I could put the new pump on
Its taking all the bits off just to get a look at the pump that take the time

You will do it quicker next time

Remember to have your heater dial turned to hot and bleed the cooling system before starting the engine.

Wot next time?
It will probably find somthing else to try my patience soon
freelanders got to love them
