water pump, oem or generic?

I think I need to change the water pump on my td5, I herd that aftermarket ones aint no good, any views ,
also can it be changed with out removing the turbo and other stuff

I have just changed my TD5 pump and after consulting the manual decided the method in it for the change is a load of TOSH.
The easiest and best way is to dismantle all the bits attached to the pump housing and remove the complete housing and attached pump from the engine block. You will need to remove the power steering pulley to get at a nut behind it. Doing it this way makes it easier to reattach the new pump and clean up the housing and also exposes the seal between the engine block and housing (not mentioned in the manual). This seal was weeping on my car. Part no for this seal is ERR 6711. One of the bolts on the back of the housing is a bit awkward but it can be done
The other minor advantage of doing it this way is that you dont have to buy any gaskets (turbo, exhaust, oil drain pipes etc). All the work can be done from the top of the engine. BTW, I used a long "hammer proof" screw driver and hammer to release the 36mm nut on the fan. After that the fan just spins off by hand. I used a Quinton Hazell pump which to be honest didn't look any different to the one I took off which I assume to be OEM. Landrover dont make pumps anyway.

There are wide variety of pumps available however and the cheaper ones do not have a good record.Land rover may not make pumps,but they also dont make seals,gaskets,headlights,many things....but DO supply them as Genuine parts.Quinton-Hazell are a reputable maker of long standing and there are several more.I dont know about the Td5 as I try to avoid them but certainly on the 300tdi one of the signs of a good pump is a cast impellor rather than a bent steel one.No doubt someone with knowledge of the 5 engine will have a rule of thumb regarding the water pumps for that unit.

Get a decent one and do it once..... Have learned on a few occasions
