Hi Guys Newby here
Bought a 2002 TD4 3 months ago with 36k on the clock (genuine). Broke down returning from Nottingham and told it's water pump. Had it brought back to my local mechanic (not a Landy guy) who reckons the engine has to be taken out and it's going to cost around £500+.

Is this about normal? Haynes reckons you can access the pump by raising the car and dropping the engine to access the pump via the front offside wheel arch.

This is my first landy (and first 4x4) so don't know the score!

I mentioned Haynes to my mech - not a positive response.. his view was that if I wanted to do it that way, he'd arrange to have it dropped off at my place, otherwise, he'd do it the way he knows!

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Did you buy from a dealer ? Warranty?

Unfortunately not from a dealer - from someone I know quite well who had just had it serviced and MOT'd by a Landy dealer. Old story... caveat emptor!

he who does the job chooses the method, but if it can be done without
removing the engine then that would be my favourite, don't forget haynes manwell written with home mechanics in mind

Done this job on my 2002 TD4. It is possible from underneath without removing the whole engine. Tight and getting to some of the fasteners does require raising and then lowering the engine to get spanner room! But very do-able.
Think there is a procedure in the RAVE cd, but that involves removing a lot of the turbo plumbing which I didn't find necessary!

Chris.

It sounds to like this guy is going to rip you off, nobody in their right mind would completely remove the engine.
You only have to support the engine with a hoist or even a jack and remove the engine steady and hydramount so you can lower the engine for access to the pump bolts.

Cheers guys - thanks for the input - looks like I shall be needing to find a new garage for landy works. Shame, I've used this guy for years - drink with him in the local and have never once felt I was being ripped off. Clearly, however, he and landys don't go together!

nb. Checked out price with Stratstones - they would charge in excess of £800

:(:(
