water loss

bit of a strange one really 2 weeks ago my dads disco seemed to lose most of its water in the header tank so he topped it back up then yesterday the temp gauge flew up to just under the red an he said the heaters went cold so he pulled over an the temp gauge dropped right back down an the heaters were working again. an water had dropped down to half way in header tank. an the same happend again today lost water but no rise in temp gauge there is no visible leaks any ideas

oh its a 300 tdi

Sounds like air locks in the system.

Your issue could be.... How did the air get there .....? (head gasket)

Aye! and where did the water go in the first place.
