Water leak in Timing case,

Tbh a DTI is handy to have anyway. I set my wheel bearings using one, disc run out, drum warp etc. and there are other things you can measure.

get a magnetic base and arm for one though.

well the good news is i have the right pump with the 10mm bolt according to the u tube clip above. Have check and loosened both bolts so ...

Have ordered the dti kit and am waiting on reply on seal..

will let you know how we get on.

The dti kit will he handy as mentioned by Flat, the dti kit you linked to has the 90 degree adaptoer which is needed for inj pump access, so no a std dti hauge alone wont do.
I have tried to find the 90 deg adaptor on its own, but no go so far.

Tbh the std timing pin kit is good enough, but no harm in being super accurate.

Well had a check that the DTI gauge and adapter fitted, so set to and used the puller, and have removed the pulley and the seal

so waiting on new seal being delivered and a timing belt kit

Well finally got the 90 semi back together had the belt on and spun it over and got diesel from all sorts of places,

So changed the leak off pipe as it was plastic and brittle that seems to have cured it and my new seal has worked ok.

Re checked timing on belt etc. had it off as convinced it was a tooth out messed around refitted it. Even had the rocker cover off to check it wasn't 180 degrees out( 3 people all checked and doubled checked the timing and we are all happy) and it fires and might just run, now think it is down to diesel pump timing.

However as i have had the front pulley off the pump to replace the seal etc. and even though it was locked feel pump timing is the most likely cause.

So have tried to get the DTI timing kit to work , but am struggling with it.

Have taken the injector pipes off to get the gauge in but it doesn't move the needle round the dial at all when i turn it over.

What am i doing wrong

Has anyone used this kit and can give me some help on which bits i should be using or at least confirm that i have the right bits etc..

Have assembled DTI gauge, medium extension and an adapter that fits hole after bolt removal between the 4 injectors.

Don't really want to take belt and pump off if i can help it, may have to if i can't get it to work or run out of adjustment on pulley and it needs to come off again.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

Fit adaptor into back of pump, fit gauge into adaptor so the needle starts to move, if the needle does not move as you insert the gauge the adaptors internal pin is to short, get a 4mm (I think) drill bit and cut down lengthwise to suit, use the shank end of the drill bit to go inside the adaptor/inj pump as it has slightly rounded end so no damage to inj pump, zero gauge then turn the engine over, if the needle does not move at all then you have another problem, first place to start is the inj pump flange/pulley, is the large nut tight? does the flange turn as the engine is turned?

Note on the adaptor/s, finger tight is good enough, no need to get heavy handed.

My timing kits are back in my toolbox at work so cannot measure cut down drill length, if you get stuck I am back to work late tomorrow so can get pics/sizes etc if needed.
I have the same kit as you, plus a different make kit and then some adaptors which I have never used!

Sounds like the probe you are using is to short. Can you try a wire down the hole to see what depth before you make contact with anything?

Thanks guys have tried the short and the medium length the long is so long that can't get the adapter to tighten onto the DTI gauge.

Could be i have overtighten something, or need to zero it, having watched endless Utube clips of this they all start with it on zero and it climbs so

wonder if i am starting wrong or got the gauge too tight so that the probe cant register it has moved the gauge outwards when i have in desperation tried to hand hold it in with no adapter.

Big pulley turns with belt haven't checked pump shaft as i am turning the key...lol

however have diesel at injector as have cracked them off to bleed the diesel and on cranking have diesel coming out

Am working my spaniel at a shoot today so if i get back to it, it will be this eve or sunday

Many thanks for your replies a measurement would be much appreciated.

You may need to shorten the long dti tip, just be careful or you'll end up with 2 that don't reach ;)

4.0mm drill bit 49mm length.
No idea which adaptor I used it with, but it worked!

Sorry @lynall had missed your post, had a day in the workshop today..

Tried in vehicle with DTI gauge but couldn't get a consistent result, so gave up ( couln't get past a 150

took belt off and removed diesel pump and put it in vice.

managed to get it working with medium length probe will check length tomorrow when back

Sussed that the gauge didn't reset after one revolution had to push it back in. also worked if i held the gauge steady as well as the adapter retimed pump and put pulley back on got a consistent reading at 160.

So pump back on vehicle and eventually after reaching tool throwing level of frustration gave up trying to fit belt and gave my 110 project some attention, ( see other thread) wished i hadn't bothered.

Help appeared ( farmer who used to run a 200 tdi disco) belt on but ran out of battery winding it over while bleeding diesel will update you later in the week

Thanks for all advise will measure probe tomorrow and post

I think the number you are after is 1.24mm or is it 1.42mm? I am sure google will help.
The gauge will continue climbing after the point needed.

If you search dti on LZ there are a few decent threads.

Well i had the 90 running today, started and ran wouldnt rev though and lots of smoke.

Re did the pump timing in the vehicle, the mid length probe works if i strip all the diesel pipes off and move my oil cooler pipe.

Have retarded it to 155 and it run and revs but not sure it is achieving full rev range. still smokes a bit but think that could be diesel in the exhaust and it has been stood for months

have started to reassemble and reckon hopefully will have it together tomorrow dependant on the weather and other factors like xmas shopping etc.

Plan on giving it a run up the farm road a few times to clear it out then possibly recheck the pump timing.

Have seen on this forum people talking about an adapter for this kit with a 90 degree bend to enabler use with diesel pipes fitted.

How does that work and where would i get one from

I have the cheap kit with the 90 deg widget, tbh it is a bit of cheap **** crap, but it works sort of!
I have tried t find the 90 degree bit on its own to no avail.
They also do 180 degree ones which look much more useful, again cannot find supplier.

Put it back together and ran it round the farm

All seemed ok

Then disaster on way home, broke down.

had a quick look but will investigate further tomorrow

Belt is intact and have diesel at injectors
Rockers look normal

think timing has slipped

ok so have put it back together,

bugger still wont start all timing belts correct

so went with pump timing and cant adjust it without moving the timing belt.

after further investigation, belt off, FIP pulley seems further back than cambelt,

cant get the pulley off, had to use a bit of blue sky thinking but eventually got the timing belt pulley off the pump.

pulley wont go on FIP flange, so locked pump and pulled flange off.

Guess either i didn't get it back together right or it slipped when i was driving home and it broke down must have done something to flange as it def has a lip or an oval shape about it.

Farmer reckons he might be able to sort it out in the lathe tomorrow.

Think i might be digging a mates spare 200 tdi engine out from its long term storage and investigating what the pump timing is set to with my dti and then either ripping the pump flange off it

or swapping pumps..

One jobs leads to many many more lots of work lots of time..

positives, as i like to look to always find positive in everything

Know a lot more about diesel pumps...

and got dome stuff done to my project 110 as well

thinking about camper conversion and a North west 500 in April covid permitting

maybe further afield another year

oh to dream.. best get cracking and get them fixed and MOT'd

Got the second pump on it.
Starts runs but very uneven and wont rev, checked the pump timing 153 tweaked it to 154 still the same.

The pump has been stood on an engine for about 5 years.

Think either it has gummed up or something. Might want running for a bit but it hadn't got any coolant or water pump on it.

Cant find the nut for my old pump, but looks like the thread might be partially stripped on the FIP shaft, cant find the right tap.

So have left it til the farm are back tomorrow so if they have any hidden taps or tools or suggestions.

while i ponder on which pump to refit

Time machine afternoon again
