hi everybody,
About 6 months ago I replaced the water pump on my 97 disco 300 tdi but ever since there has been a slight leak from behind the water pump housing in other words this is the housing that the water pump bolts onto. there appears to be a gasket behind it, when I replaced the pump there were 8 bolts holding it on, three of those being longer through bolts I put some gasket cement on the shanks of these three bolts to assist sealing but obviously it didnt work. My question is does this housing come of without any indepth stripping. There dosent seem to be anything about it on the rav disc or in the Pains manual. I shoud have paid more attention when I did the pump. any help woud be appreciated before I start stripping it down again. cheers. Beni

Hi Beni
I had to change my water pump last year. There is a gasket behind the housing that the pump bolts onto. It is known as the "P" gasket. I got a new one from dealer with new bolts. You are not alone, I forgot to change the P gasket when I did the pump, then had to take the pump off again 2 months later to chane the gasket Doh!
Its worth doing as they are a weakness and if it goes completely, you'll cook the engine :(
Hope this helps
Andy

thanks for that, did you have to do any further stripping down to get the housing off. I mean like timing belt or anything. cheers.

As I remember there are just another few sunken bolts in the housing to remove and the thing will come off. You dont need to remove timing belt or anything major. I cleaned the housing and the block before fitting the gasket with a little Hylomar jointing compound and it has been fine since.
I seem to remember the bolts I got at the dealers were upgraded ones but it was last year and Ive a worse memory than a goldfish!!
What was I writing about?
Where am I??
oh, **** I'm at work

the memory thing was my problem too, I couldnt remember what I saw when I removed the water pump. It looks like I have everything I need to do the job so will have another go this weekend. cheers Beni
