hello there,

I have being thinkin gof buying a Landrover 90 for some time now.
most of my friends are telling me im nuts. "it's like a tractor" was one comment i got.
i understand its not a range rover and pretty basic.
i enjoy the outdoorsy life and just always liked the defender.
i am living in southern ireland and have spotted a few i like. but what should i be looking for when i go to buy one. and also should i buy a basic one and do it up myself or buy one that has all the bells and whistles.

thanks for the help guys..

really appreciate it.

hello...try the 'search' fingy. Its very much down to you...a mid 1980's 90 N/A is, relatively speaking, ahem, slow and noisy...but the engine is bulletproof..preferred model is a 200/300tdi..but costs more of course.
Rust rust rust...thoroughly check chassis and bulkhead...
I'd buy one with no toys then you can do whatever you want to suit your needs..half the fun is trawling ebay et al looking for your snorkel, wheels, tyres, suspension kit..

Good luck..

living in the mid west.
budget is around 4 to 5000 euros so not to high. spotted a few one with all the stuff on it and one bog standard. I think ill have more fun doing it up myself but the money is a problem. for the extras.

thanks again.

Hey Mate,

Getting a 90 is only a good idea if you love it because it will try and test your patience everyday, especially the older it is. It is also uncomfortable and underpowered. However, there is a very good following, good spares availiblility and 1001 different upgrades and parts. Plus it looks the bol****s. If you are sure you want one then you need to look for a good clean one and save a little bit of budget to clear any faults off it you might not pick up when you check it over.

You then need to decide what spec you are looking for? Do you want 7 seats, 3 seats, 2 seats, windows or van etc. I would look for a 200tdi or 300tdi as these leave good scope for performance mods at a later date than the old turbo and N/a. Another thing you could do is buy a discovery 200tdi and an N/a 90 and transplant the engine and PAS etc. If you want more info on that then let me know.

Otherwise make sure you check chassis and engine numbers against the paperwork. Common areas of rust are on the bulkhead corners and rear cross members.
