Our series 3 seems to wander excessively. Have renewed all steering linkages and no play in steering box, have renewed leaf springs, steering damper and shock absorbers but is still difficult to keep in a straight line while driveing, is this normal? Anything else to check?

Could be that the top swivels are too tight, causing you to continualy over correct.

I'd also check wheel bearings. If one side is stiffer than the other it might cause these sorts of problems ...

With all new steering gear, the steering damper shouldn't really be needed.
Swivils, wheel bearings and tyres are really the only targets left, without revisiting everything you have done.... BUT...... so many possible areas for a 'silly' mistake in everything you have done.
Take the steering damper out, first of all, that wont do much, but it will loosen the steering up, so you can get a better 'feel' for what's going on.
While down there, check over all the ball-joints again; on a taper, fit, you can torque these up, but becouse of the fit, they dont always take it, they will relax a little.... so re-check the torque on them all.
Next suspect is the steering relay.... not mentioned on your list of stuff done, and usually left alone as they are a right royal PITA to get out, but, bushes wear and the shaft will wobble........ AND if you have dropped the arms off it to renew the balls, or to try and take it out and NOT put them back on properly, THEN the overcentre steering geometry can be out, in which case you will get a wobble trying to hold it in a straight line....
Next up, tracking, if you've done the track-rod balls, have you set the tracking? Again, if it was tracked for old worn balls, new-ones are likely to have changed the toe-in angle, and that too would give you a straight line nervouseness....
Suspension...... did everything line up? Did you get the 'pips' on the springs to sit in the location boss on the axle? Are the U-Bolts all in teh right place and torqued up?
Did you 'settle' the suspension and re-righten the bush pins?

It's quite tricky but well worth persevering with - put oil in the steering relay, as yours may have run dry. The steering on mine was awful until I did this.

I might be stating the obvious but the steering box and swivel housings need oil too.

thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. landy at holiday home and will check out this advice at the week end, thanks all
