Ok, don't quite understand the whole wading kit thing. I understand that I need to take a blank to my timing case cover with a pipe off it up high level, but what others do I need? I have some pipe I was given by another enthusiast but not sure what to do with it. Does it mean that once in place I can leave my wading plugs in?

You need to out one out of your timing belt cover up to your snorkel if you have one,
Plus you will need one for each axle up high ans sad for gearbox and transfer box, there the main ones, and as far as plugs go, I would personally take them out when you finished wading to let the oil or whatever to drain out, tpand then just put them back in when you go wading again

Thanks Gozzy, sounds dumb maybe but how do I know where on the axles / xfer box to take the breather pipes?

fitting extended breathers while a good idea doesnt make the units water proof oil needs checking after as well as wheel bearings

There should be some old ones on them which are black I think going under the bonnet well that's what was on my mates defender

The ones for gearbox and transfer box should run along the top of the offside chassis and poke up somewhere behind the engine, they are easy to spot as they have hooked end.

The front axle one should be easy to if you get under the vehicle you'll see union sticking out the axle with a pipe coming off it, should run up the bulkhead near nearside shock and poke at somewhere the top of the engine bay.

Rear axle is just as easy to find but the end will finish somewhere near the top of the fuel tank. Just extended mine at the weekend.

Cheers, I have the breather pipe but can anyone tell me where to get the breather fittings (inc the timing case blank)

Wading all depends how deep you want to go. A standard Disco can take 600mm easily so that's a deep puddle lol. I have had water coming in through the dashboard vents which is rather interesting, but I tend to keep it as low as necessary.

Extending your breathers is sensible, but then again if you're talking that then you need to to fit a snorkel because you're air inlet is at the same height as the standard breathers.

Once you have fitted the snorkel and extended the axle, gearbox, transfer box and timing cover breathers, you should then pay attention to the fuel tank breather. This is located on top of the file pipe and is the lowest vent on the vehicle.

Using 8mm dia pipe, larger than the other breather pipe, you can extend this up inside the panel behind the rear light and all the way to the roof if you want to. No it is not inside the vehicle so you will be fine.

PLEASE NOTE
Having breathers and a snorkel does not prevent water from entering the engine or the axles. They are supposed to balance the pressure differences created when a hot metal component is dunked into cold water.

Check all fluids after wading as water WILL get in through gaskets etc.

I wade as much as I can and whilst I have extended breathers to all components, the fluids can still get contaminated.

The more you wade the more you will go through wheel bearings, pads and numorous other items quicker than indicated within your service manual.

But it is soo much fun!!!!!!

wot he said ^^^^^^

Plus just remeber if ya go's as deep as i did then everything gets water in it and all bets r off n e way so always check the depth of the water cos its rather upsetting seeing ya new smart fone float past yer nose !!!!!

Thanks, I think I will make an effort to change the oils regularly. By the way Robin, thanks again for the plugs mate.

I need to buy the actual breather connectors from somewhere (I have the pipe) but no idea where I can get them from as there are lots of kits on fleabay but they include the pipe (which I have) and are silly money to start with.

your on about your axel breathers arnt you ??

all you need to do is cut old hose off i undid the banjo type breather on top of axel and heat shrunk the new pipe on

Guys leave the fuel tank alone if the land rover tips it may spill and catch fire
