Hi all

p38 range needs 4 new tyres, I general use the car in winter and we do get snowed in every year. (very deep this year) so need a desent snow tyre but do mainly motorway miles would the snow tyre just ware out to quickly.

What do you think of Vredestein Quatrac 3 SUV are they any good? best price paid?

or any other recommendations, old tyres on car Pirelli Scorpion ST

Thanks

marc.

Do a search on winter tyres, here and on google - you'll find Vredestein are highly thought of. I posted recently about my experience with them, as well. They operate best in temps under 7C, consistently above that they will wear out quicker as they are much softer rubber. Having said that, they perform well even at higher temps. They are also cheaper than normal tyres like the Pirellis - take note though that STs are not made anymore, and the STRs are not well liked by all the fussy P38 Rangies. You could pick up a set of cheap 16" rims and put winter tyres on them and change back to your usual set around April - saves the wear on more expensive tyres and is a no-brainer really, unless you have no space for the spare set. Big, wide low profile tyres are dreadful in snow and effectively make your car a 2+ ton sledge. You can do the winter rims and tyres thing for under £500 all in - small price for your safety and your life and that of others. Lots of other winter tyres other than Vreds - Coopers, Avon, Pirelli make some too - but Vreds are very cost effective and perform superbly in the wet and slippy conditions as well as snow. Have a look at Camskills website for more info on them, also the etyres.co.uk website. Hope that helps!

Having two sets of tyres would be great but i have no room and wife would not like the tyres in the house.

When you say 7 degrees is that tyre temp or air temp?

thanks

After researching options I put Toyo Open Country AT's on my P38. The grip on snow and ice has been extraordinary. I live in the Pennines so they have been thoroughly tested over recent weeks on fresh snow, compacted snow and ice, both up hill and down (steep). So far maintained 100% control.

They are an all year tyre so should get decent mileage.

I do not have verdestein's on my P38, but have them n my wife's car, i put them on in November 2008 and have left them on all year, the wife wanted them left on as she said they felt a lot more stable when cold and in heavy rain, they have done 12k and still have 8mm on them, they were cheaper than the standard Bridgestone tyre by £50 each, so a big saving on the four fitted, i will be leaving them on. I would highly recommend them, they are Snowtrac 3, the are a very agressive 'v' tread pattern but are very quiet, even on her prius.

Ambient - ie just the air temp. If temp outside is higher than single figures, the softer rubber does wear quicker, no problem to using them though if you want to - see post above. There are people who leave them on all year round, and they are cheaper than "normal" tyres.

I meant to add - I have Vreds Wintrac Extreme XL and they are great- huge difference-. You need to change winter tyres at around 4mm though, not the 1.6 legal limit, as they lose effectivity if they get very low even though they may still be legal, there would be no advantage to having them.

I had Vredestein Sesanta SUV tyres on my Touareg and a colleague ran then on his VW too. Mine were on 17" and his were 20" wheels.
The Sesanta is a road biased SUV tyre with a very unusual tread pattern designed by Guigario. In fairness it wasn't exceptional off road but on road was awesome! Also they lasted twice as long as the Pirelli's and Goodyears on the same cars.
We're now both trying Hankook's which are running well too.
