viscous fan

Sounds like it, it should be very loose when cold but tightens up as the rad and engine warm up. I removed mine and installed a Kenlowe, leaves a lot more space to change the 2 belts etc.

Just drove to work was v noisey when left now working ok ?? but will still change it,how can this be.???

A ghost in the machine?

It should be stiff when you first try to turn it with the engine cold. As the engine spins up the fluid moves around and it spins but with no real force behind it. Then, if it gets hot the fluid stiffens and the fan gets some force behind it. There shouldn't be any mechanical noises. I don't know of any 'technical' way of testing them. If you doubt it you'd better change it, these engines don't like overheating.

Only suitable as a back up to the viscous on the V8 IMO, or you could do the mod and add a Kenlowe type fan although I wouldn't recommend Kenlowe, they seem to fail quite often.

Makes sense. I'm sure Land Rover would't have spent money on a viscous fan if they didn't need to.

Surprisingly, they would. Old habits die hard. Electric would always have been better, full power cooling at low revs, less water/mud splatter in the engine bay when off road, quicker warm up, quieter and very slight improvement in economy not to mention better acess to the front of the engine etc:)

Hi Datatek. Am tempted to put a kenlow on for all the reasons you give. Have used them on old Triumph cars and they made quite a difference on smaller engines. Always found them reliable, but as you say the P38 has got a back up with the aircon fans.
P.S. Did you manage to loosen that viscous nut from your rangey?

No, I can't shift the viscous, when I can get my MR2 out of the barn (waiting for an alternator) I'll remove the 4 x 10mm bolts and take it apart on the bench.
There are better makes than Kenlowe about now, google is your friend.

Just pull one from a modern car from a breakers/scrappers

just make sure you get enough cable to connect it to your existing wires - spend your savings on beer :)
