Dose anyone have a suggestion on the simplest way to remove the Viscous fan on a 300TDI when there is no belt to tension against the turn. I'm using a 32ml Viscous spanner with little luck. I am correct assuming that it is a left handed thread.??

it is lh thread ,hit the center of each flat in turn ,it will just unscrew by hand then

Hang on....I can rotate the nut by hand multiple times clockwise but the pully just turns with it!!!!! Effectively I can rotate the pully as many times as I like by that nut!! now I'm feeling really thick, I've normally had no problem removing this, although the belt has always been on!!!

I'll try and post a video first thing in the morning!!

tdi is clockwise I used to hit the viscous spanner & it will give. I then brought myself a pair of viscous spanners of e bay one locks it the other one loosens the nut, its brilliant

Nope braying the nut with a bolster hasn't budged it at all. Obviously I can't hit the nut with the 32ml Viscous spanner as the pully just turns and there doesn't appear to be any other way of jamming the pully. Has anyone got any ideas.?

flatt headed punch does work if done enough

Bugger the nut just so soft it's not working!!! Any other ideas James.?

your using the wrong type of punch ,something like 1/2 inch bar at least and hit center of flat ,it does work as ive said ive done it lots of times and nut doesnt look like that after, cant you put belt back on ,hold pulley with filter strap ,wedge a bar against the bolt head

i brought a spanner from ebay, put it on and give it a good knock with your hand, once it cracks its easy enough. remember its clockwise to undo it

Air chisel...1 brrrrrr takes the fan off of anything.

or

wrap an old belt around the pulley and clamp the loop with a vicegrip
