Vibration

Hiya all. Am looking for some advice. I’ve got a discovery td5 metropolis, auto, and she’s developed a vibration at low speed. When it gets upto about 40 to 50 mph the vibration goes. I have took the props off and checked and greased ( new front prop fitted about 18months ago ), refitted and vibration is still there. Any body any suggestions or help

Only the usual stuff, wheel nuts all tight, especially left rear? Balance weight fallen off? Check both pinions coming from the diffs have no side to side movement. I had that once on a D1, took ages to find out some idiot had not tightened the pinion nut up tight enough. I am sure you checked for freeplay in the UJs, when the props were off.

I did mate, didn’t seem any play. If it were transfer box or gearbox, would it give same symptoms? Just trying to rule out things.

Doubt it, but I'm no expert. You did check the wheel nuts then?

Going to swap rear wheels onto front tomorrow and check everything.

Have a good look at the wheels, when a balance weight falls off, (and they are only stuck on), it leaves a mark.
Forgot to ask this, do you feel the vibration through the steering wheel or in your bum, i.e. does the whole vehicle vibrate? If the former, it's the front wheels, if not it's the rear ones, or something else completely.

Also, a prop shaft could be out of balance, check to see if a weight has fallen off one of them. They are usually thin plates welded or stuck on.

Hello again. Have just been under the landy to see if I could see anything amiss and had another good look at front propshaft. I have noticed that at the double cardan end there is slight play up and down, not in the uj’s But in the joint, is this right or should there be no play?

Looks like got to the root of the problem. The joints on the prop are fine and it all feels ok when on, but when I am at a certain position on the propshaft the double cardan part wobbles and has loads of play. Going to order a new prop and a repair kit for old prop then I have a spare.
