hi all.

getting a scary vibration from the landy at about 40mph. here is the story so far.

removed half shafts from rear axle and it seems to improve but not go away (feels like something is holding the vehicle back but havn't another landy to test against)

Prop joints all seems to be ok

drove the vehicle with no rear prop and its gone completely (if i remember, it was a while ago)

if my train of thought is right then its either the transfer box or the rear diff / half shafts.

noticed one of the gearbox rubber mounts has broke which i have replaced but it didn't cure the vibration

Any ways i can check these things out?

thanks in advance

do u feel the vibration on the gear lever? if u say u removed the rear propshaft and it was gone, could be a number of things. check the play on the flange at the rear of xfer box. could be the rear bearing on the xfer. also maybe your propshaft either threw a weight or is out of true

feel the vibration in the whole car..also forgot to mention....it gets worse if you feed more power in, actually feels better changiong down to four gear and backing off throttle a bit

dont sound like yer rear half shafts...u would feel the vibration all the time. get under the car on a level surface, out of gear with handbrake off and a pry bar or long screw driver and go thru yer drivetrain from front to back. i smell a rat with yer xfer box or propshaft. i had a problem with the rear flange on the xfer box....the bolt in the output shaft/flange had come loose and the splines on the shaft and flange were screwed

i checked play in uj's and didn't seem to bad....however i have bought new ones just in case but i dont think its the problem

was afraid you'd say that, is re-furbing the xfer box a big job ?

If you've already bought them you might aswell fit them. What have you got to lose bar an hour or so of your time. You never know it might be the cure.

Landys are strange beasts, it took me months to get to the bottom of a knocking noise, with a process of elimination I eventually got there and also bucket loads of help from here.

thanks for all the replys guys.

I think it is the xfer box, having removed half shafts, rear diff, and props and driven the vehicle i can still feel the vibration kicking in,(just at a higher speed now and more slight. Rear of the xfer box must be fooked. anyroad the box is coming out monday and a newer(ish) one going in.....fingers crossed

do yerself a favour. b4 ya drop the box remove the propshaft and put a spanner on the nut that hold the flange....u might get lucky....ive heard of a similar problem and the nut tightened up a half turn or so and problem was solved. if not, it sounds like yer rear bearing has collapsed....can be replaced with the box in position tho.
