Hi

Looking for some advice.

I have a 97 disco 1 that is giving me a quite horrible vibration as I go along. When I pull of the clutch is fine so I am ruling this out eg clutch slipping.

So what is happening. As I get to 40 mph and higher there is a vibration that seems to come from the back of the car. If I slow down it seems to go but then some 10 seconds later it comes back.

The disco has a 40 mm lift on es9000 shocks and HD springs and it is running on 235/85/16 insa turbos.

I am thinking that there is a problem with the propshaft somewhere, I am assuming the UJ may be the issue??

If this is the problem do you think it will be worth fitting a wide angle prop to the car?? Would you fit wide angled props front and rear, or should I just do one and the other when I can afford it??

Appreciate any knowledge out there

Cheers

Billy

Hi

Thanks for the advice so far. The disco is in the garage today getting its MOT - I have asked the mechanic to look at the drivetrain as well.

Is it worth fitting wide angle props at all?? From what I have read online they should alleviate some of the issues I am experiencing

Many thanks

Billy

They would help, although I would be more inclined to get front and rear radius arms to accommodate the lift prior to getting the props. You could fit a prop spacer as a cheaper alternative to wide angle props.

Hi

Just spoken to QT services they have said much the same.

Is it ok to do this step by step eg fit the front correction arms and then do the back later or have they got to be done together??

QT said it would be ok to do the front whilst fitting a wide angled prop to the front and then "catch up" with the back.

Really appreciating the advice many many thanks

Hi been looking at things and still looking for advice please.

Having looked on the web you can buy 15mm spacers to fit to the propshaft to reduce the angle on it. If I fit one of these do I have to fit castor correction arms as well or can I just get away with fitting the spacer??

Or, and please be honest, is it worth just going the whole way and buying and fitting a wide angle propshaft and castor correction arms??

Appreciate your time and advice

Billy

Lifting the vehicle will alter the suspension geometry, only modified radius arms can rectify this.

Bollocks, that's the cheap 'easy' solution but is by no means the only one ..

Hi Billy, if the noise goes when you pull the clutch in (assuming you are moving) I can't see how it can be a transmission problem.

I would be to see if the noise is still there when the gearbox and transfer are in neutral and you set the revs to say 2500rpm.

Hi

The disco has just had its MOT yesterday and the mechanic looked at the propshaft for me and told me the front UJ's were knackered - so he is fitting some new ones as an interim fix. However, I still need to get to the bottom of the suspension question:

If I fit a propshaft spacer will this suffice with a 40mm lift?? Will I have to still fit castor correction arms as well??

Or

Do I fit new castor correction arms and get a wide angled propshaft??

Thanks for the advice so far this issue of suspension is really intestine me ans I admit I need to learn more :confused:

Cheers

with only a 40 mm lift you should be ok but you do really need to get under the car and grease yer props regular cos the uj's do go throgh hell and back. mine is lifted + 5 inch with wide angle front and a 200 rear prop, rear cranked trailing arms castor ccorrect front arms etc but i grease the prop uj's and steering joints every 2 weeks maybe a bit excessive biit mines in the mud most days.
