Very low clutch

I just bought an 03 diesel freelander and the clutch is really low to the ground. I have read a few of the posts on here regarding this and i am in no way mechanicaly minded so i will be taking it to the garage on monday...... i just thought i would ask the question on here to see what my best case/worse case scenarios are in terms of work needing done and possible cost.
The cluch bites around 1-2 cm off the floor, it has no problem selecting gears and runs well apart from this. As far as i can see there is nothing leaking anywhere visable and the fluid does not seem to be getting lower in it at all. There seems to be a minir movement where the slave connects but i wouldnt say it was excessive.
I bought this quite cheap purely as a second car for running to work and taking the dog up the local forest tracks and because i have always fancied one and wasnt planning on keeping it more than a year. It has really high milage so i dont know how viable it would be to have a major fix done. It has loads of reciepts as the previous owner reaally looked after it including a new clutch several months back.

Hi, check out threads on td4 clutch with my id on. There is a mod which I did after calculating the fluid displaced in the master vs the position and action of the slave - basically there is not enough push !!

Extending the push rod by only 3mm works a treat. Also trimming the plastic on the push rod to allow it to move to the floor helps. Both of these mods will also allow bleeding to be done properly (see another thread on bleeding) and then the air is correctly expelled and the clutch works great again. Seems to be as the car gets older things wear and the design travel is too short.

If it's had a clutch recently. Then it could just need bleeding. There could also be some lost motion at the pedal, which can happen.

As Nodge said it might have had a new clutch and just need bled but it could also have had a replacement master cylinder. If they fitted a cheapo ebay unit it could be the cause.
Freelandy's bodge might sort the issue if bleeding fails but if that fails you might need a new master cylinder.

My clutch was changed as a matter of cause as I had to have new gear box, and was replaced with genuine LUK clutch kit
and then changed the master with a luk master and still ended up with a very low bit point. it was bled a couple of times,
my little ''mod'' (bodge) has helped know end
it's gone from juddering if I dipped the clutch in traffic to quite pleasant to drive
I'd try bleeding it up first then you could try my mod and bleed it up again before splashing on new expensive master
