Afternoon, put a reconditioned vcu on at the end of August, (54 plate td4) first time off the tarmac today and front wheels spinning out but nothing from the back wheels, i.e no 4wd, should note it was on a grass field on a incline, what’s your thoughts on this one gents.

Where was it from? If it was from Bell Engineering, ask them to test it. Normally there recon VCUs are as good as the original part.
Not bell, got it through local

didnt come from bell, my local spares shop got it for me.

Never heard of a VCU leaking!?!? Can you remember where it was leaking from and was the 'original' a refurb?
Do the One Wheel Up Test - you'll soon find out what is going on.....

If it was leaking fluid then it was probably refurbed before and not properly sealed. (Don't ask how I know )
Easiest way to check things is do the one wheel up test and watch what is happening to the VCU and propshafts.
