Out of interest. Have a look at the year of manufacture that is stamped into it. This will show you what year the VCU was made. If it is the original VCU the year will match or be before the year the car was made. If the VCU has a more recent year stamp you know it's a replacement.
Also look for evidence of drilling on the casing, it's amazing what can happen to the VCU in the hands of an unscrupulous "reconditioner"!!

The number round the edge is probably the original marking GKN put on when it was made. It doesn't look as if it's been re-welded so it's probably in original form. The date is 2 numbers within the stamp.

It's possible dodgy people could have stamped it themselves.

What is the marking made out of? White paint or something else? Scrap yards and sellers of second hand parts often mark them for warranty.

Think you may be right hippo on closer inspection it looks like a white line has been spin painted on GKN reads

GKN-V 404810 8343

I'm guessing 2010?
On a 98

I'm not sure as the pattern is different and they usually have numbers like 405558 = v6 and 405520 = td4 which would signify there's a difference. In reality we don't know if the set-up inside is different on a v6 when compared to the td4 as we don't know the precise silicon mix and amount (without that it's just a guess) but we do know they're physically different in the design of the v6 not having the damper and bracket to hold it. We would need some more 1998 Freelander vcu numbers as a comparison to see if there's a pattern.

I'm guessing that before 2000 they used a single number for the year.
GKN-V 404810 (8) 343
The bracketed 8 would stand for 1998.
That is just a guess though.

I'm of the opinion that the VCU fitted to the V6 was different in operation and appearance.

I agree. If they didn't need to do something different, then they would have made both v6 and none v6 vcu's the same, with the same ability to mount the damper, but not fit the damper to the v6's. Percentage-wise v6's are too low to make something different without the need to. I'll cut mine open as I don't need it, to compare to others who have cut their td4's open.
