I need a bit of advice for a Freelander newbie. Just bought a 1998 xedi and within first 30 miles of use noticed that there is silicone fluid leaking from the VCU. Does this mean that it will need replacing, or is there a possibility of replacing a seal? Any advice appreciated.

Not a serviceable item I'm afraid, although there are replacements available on an exchange basis now.

You can always remove it and run in front wheel drive only until you sort it.

As stated it has to be replaced. Did you buy from a dealer as if so they should be picking up the bill, if not you could still have a claim against the seller as the car had the fault when you bought it and under the sale of goods act it has to be fit for the purpose it was bought for.

Thanks for the prompt responses. I bought the car from an independant dealer. The car is booked in for him to inspect on tomorrow, just wanted to get some knowledge to ensure he doesn't fob me off. I think it should be covered on the warranty, but, will if necessary go down the not fit for pupose route. So far the dealer is making the right noises about resolving it. In the meantime what is the consequence of driving it (just pottering about, 10 miles a day) until it is fixed?

If it seizes up the put a ird unit(intermediate reduction drive) on the list so would not risk it if you can help it, however it would probably be ok
