is there any way to tell the age of your vcu

Just been under the car and mine looks very new...... No rust , no damage

It's marked gkn and has a serial number...... Can this number tell you the age

Chris

Don't know. Other than general interest I'm not sure age makes much difference to whether it works well or not. Probably more related to the history of the car - particularly whether the tyres have been looked after well (ie how often its been cooked).

Agree that age doesn't matter in relation to whether it works or not....... Just interested .... The previous owner didn't mention vcu replacement but was surprised how clean it is given that it's a 2004 car

Hi
My car is a 2002 td4 and when I took the vcu off it was stamped 02 and mine has done 120000 miles but if it had been reconditioned before I got it it could have come off any car.So the number does not mean anything.

Might be worth getting a collection of vcu serial numbers and year of car to see if there's any relation....I'm pretty sure mine was original.. We could input the info into a database....maybe a job for Mr Hippo?

That wouldn't help to know if a units been refurbed

Mr Hippo did a thread about VCU age some time ago. They are date stamped at the factory. However there's no way of telling if the VCU is the one supplied with the car, unless the dates match the vehicle year of manufacture.

The original GKN brand new vcu's fitted to the Freelander 1 are marked with 2 different part numbers, as per the serial number fred. We think later versions are marked with a trail of dots making up the numbers, as opposed to earlier ones which were stamped, from what we have seen. Same for the serial number. The part number for the v6 is different to all other engine FL1's. They all have a date code anorl. It would be wise to assume it's the original if it's the same year as yer hippo, if it's not been reconditioned. If it is reconditioned then there's no way to tell the age, even with a receipt.
